Coach Explains Decision to Throw in Towel in UFC Vancouver Headliner

Fatties on Sherdog calling a pro-fighter “soft” is beyond hilarious.

Good for his health, not so good for his name.

A pro athlete that has championship aspirations should have cardio for 5 rounds.. Anything else is a disgrace
You don't know what happened. It's possible he was sick or had a health condition that drained him.

It's like a singer on tour. Sometimes things happen that messes up the voice and you get a cancellation or a suboptimal performance

Reinier de Ridder’s coach is standing by his decision to throw in the towel after the fourth round in the UFC Vancouver headliner.

De Ridder started quickly but faded badly down the stretch against Brendan Allen in their middleweight bout at the Rogers Center in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on Saturday night. In the later rounds, “The Dutch Knight” struggled to return to his corner, as he appeared to be badly fatigued by the grappling exchanges that occurred in the fight. According to coach Harun Ozkan, it was the “right call” to throwel in the towel prior to the fifth frame.

“Last night didn’t go as we wanted,” Ozkan wrote on Instagram. “After a very strong start in the first round, things quickly started fading and we couldn’t really recover from the shots in and after the second round. I made the call to stop the fight after the fourth round. I take full responsibility for that decision and it was the right call to make for me in the moment. It’s not a decision I ever wanted to make, but I guess sometimes you have to.

My job is to coach, but also to look out for my fighter’s health. I’ve been with Reinier for basically his whole career and saw too many signs that made me step in. If I didn’t do anything, he would’ve continued the fight. Rather than risk unnecessary damage, I decided to call it a day and go home as healthy as possible. Live to fight another day.”

De Ridder entered UFC Vancouver on a four-bout winning streak, and he could have had a legitimate claim to a title shot with an impressive showing against Allen. However, Ozkan wasn’t willing to let the former ONE Championship title holder go out on his shield in the final five minutes after watching him struggle for the previous three rounds.

Coach Offers No Excuses for Loss

“I absolutely do not care about pleasing others if it comes at the cost of someone’s health,” Ozkan added. “There’s a thin line between ’being tough’ and watching out for your health. This sport can be brutal. These guys sacrifice a lot of their life in and out of the cage — there’s no need for excess damage if it can be avoided. Most people forget they’re human too.

Laughed at the Towelie emoji - but agree 100 % behind the rationale.

If RDR is done, he's done.

Who gives a fuck if the UFC think he should keep fighting because "JUST BLEED"?

They demand "JUST BLEED" but never reward it unless it's somehow upset or fight of the year.

I mean, are people really objecting to it? Dude literally couldn't stand up on his own after rd 4. He got beat up a bit yeah, but if a guy is too exhausted to stand on his own he obviously can't defend himself and has zero chance to come back and win.

Yeah, I think most people aren't against it, just more so disappointed in the fact that he so easily got to the point of needing his corner to save him in the first place.

I fully respect the decision of a corner to prioritize their fighter's health and safety in this way. IMHO, it should happen much more often than it does.

Having said that...it is still a rather humbling (if not humiliating) way to go out...especially when your opponent had half a camp. I know DDR is now saying he was sick all week and broke his hand in R1...it is still a pretty rough look and of course he will have to endure the comments from fighters and fans...but it was still a smart call by his corner and smart of him not to object.

That came from a fake RDR account. Basically saying he had everything Poatan had in his first Ank fight.

I can understand that, yeah. I mean, I was telling anyone who'd listen "Hey, there are issues wirh RDR's gas tank. He looked terrible vs Bobby cardio-wise, and was fortunate Bobby looked at least as bad. And that fight wasn't even super high paced." And even I'm surprised how quickly he had nothing left.

So when he says he was sick, I guess I sorta buy it? No way to know for sure but he was worthless after 5 minutes and he completely controlled those minutes. Yes he was hunting a finish but he had Allen's back a lot of the round and that's not a spot where you're expending a ton of energy.

The guy has been asking for a vacation after his last few fights. 5 fights in 11 months at this level is just unrealistic. Maybe he's sick, maybe he was burned out. I don't know, but I do not believe that was indicative of his best physical condition. He gassed abnormally fast and abnormally hard.

For sure he did, even though I absolutely think he has cardio issues. Looked somewhat gassed vs Meerschaert, looked gassed vs Bobby, now this. But this was extreme for sure.

The decision to call it wasn't what was bad, it's how a top 5 guy could get that exhausted that quickly. I mean dude was pretty gassed after the first round where he was completely in control and spent almost the whole round grappling from the top position and not really even throwing gnp to wear himself out.

He took a little bit on gnp, but Allen's whole sig strike count for 20 minutes of fighting was like 20 strikes. RDR is supposed to be one of the best grapplers in the division, and was so gassed he barely made it back to his corner after 4 rounds of almost entirely grappling.

Fighting off his back cost him the fight, his coach just saved him taking avoidable damage.

Not the first time he has gassed.... Disgraceful for a "Professional" Athlete.. not just shitting on him.. anyone that gasses.. Felt the same when BJ quit on the stool.

So...Sherdog, MMAfighting, etc. all quoted a fake account?

I'm confused...

This is a badass thing to do actually because when you are that exhausted the amount of things that could possibly even kill you are endless. The dude is actually really old and has already had a whole career, became a champion and for some reason decided to cut weight 4 times this year. Him being sick actually does explain the severe cardio drop as Rob looked more tiered than him when they fought.

Whats more humiliating when your main skills are BJJ, getting subbed after dominating the 1st or having your coach throw the towel because your body could not do it this time?
