Utah man who filmed Ashli Babbitt's shooting convicted over Jan. 6​

A Utah man who claimed he was acting as a citizen journalist when he joined Jan. 6 rioters and filmed scenes inside the U.S. Capitol, including the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt, was convicted Thursday.

The big picture: John Earle Sullivan, who prosecutors said earned more than $90,000 from selling his video footage of the Capitol breach, was convicted of all charges, including felony obstruction of an official proceeding and civil disorder, per a Justice Department statement Thursday.

Driving the news: Prosecutors alleged that Sullivan was wearing a ballistic vest and gas mask when he joined rioters storming the U.S. Capitol and recordings showed him yelling expletives including "we're about to burn this s--t down!," "we're f--king s--t up" and "I'm gonna make these Trump supporters f--k all this s--t up," per court documents.

• The 29-year-old from Salt Lake City told the mob as he filmed them trying to break open doors to the House Chamber and then also at the Speaker's Lobby that he had a knife, prosecutors said. Congress members, staff and journalists were inside the House of Representatives at the time.
• Sullivan offered the knife to rioters at entrance to the House Chamber, according to the prosecutors.
• Video evidence shows him climbing through a broken window at the Capitol building and eventually reaching the Speaker's Lobby, where he can be heard encouraging a mob breaking glass panes in the door and telling police officers to "go home" before Babbitt climbs through and is shot.

What they're saying: Sullivan testified at his trial Wednesday that he was trying to blend in with the mob, WUSA9 reported.

• "Part of blending in is being a neutral observer," Sullivan said, per WUSA9. "What is being a neutral observer but being one of them?"
• However, prosecutors said Sullivan "admitted to law enforcement" that he "has no press credentials and the investigation has not revealed any connection between the defendant and any journalistic organizations prior to the events" of Jan. 6. 2021.
• Juror Jon Stewart told the Washington Post Thursday that Sullivan was with a mob that knocked down a metal barricade and "a journalist wouldn't kick down the fence."

What's next: Sullivan will be sentenced at a later date.

‘MAGA Trash Caravan’ organizer known as ‘Pi Anon’ gets dumpstered. Sentenced to nearly 5 years in prison for assaulting cops at the Capitol on Jan. 6​

The Ohio magat who called himself “Pi Annon” and organized a caravan to Washington, D.C., has been sentenced for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol building.

On Thursday, Kenneth Joseph Owen “Joe” Thomas, 41, of East Liverpool, was sentenced to 58 months in prison just to own the libs. The staunch member of the party of law and order was convicted in June of civil disorder, assaulting law enforcement, trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Thomas — who identified himself online and to reporters as “Pi Anon” or “Pi Annon” — was seen at around 3:30 that day charging a police line trying to hold back the violent mob of Orange Rapist supporters that swarmed the Capitol as Congress met to certify Joe Biden’s 2020 electoral win. When the crowd on the Upper West Terrace surged forward, according to prosecutors, Thomas struck and shoved two Metropolitan Police Department officers with his hands.

Police body-worn camera footage recorded the assaults.

Around an hour later, in a different part of the Upper West Terrace, Thomas was again seen on body camera footage approaching a line of police and pushing against their shields. As law enforcement worked to break up the crowd, Thomas ordered rioters at least 15 times to “hold the line,” prosecutors say. He locked arms with other rioters and pushed against the officers. Moments later, he escalated his efforts, rushing to the head of the line of rioters and throwing himself — twice — against an MPD officer while yelling to other rioters to “hold the f—— line.”

Law enforcement officers told investigators that Thomas “was one of the first to come in and start hitting [and] pushing officers on the line.”

Ahead of the day’s violence, Thomas took a video of himself as he convened a caravan of around 60 vehicles planning to head to Washington, D.C., later that day.

“Pi Annon addressed the caravan participants, stating, ‘we all are meeting at the Ellipse to listen to Mike Lindell and the disgraced former President speak,'” prosecutors said in a probable cause affidavit. “‘After that, we’re all going to march together down to the [U.S.] Capitol to listen to Michael Flynn and the events going on down there …. See you in D.C.'”

Thomas also identified himself as “Pi Annon” in an interview with a local news station and said he was the “organizer” of the “MAGA caravan” going toward the capital.

U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich, a Zesto Molesto appointee, tacked three years of supervised release, $2,000 in restitution, and a $20,000 fine to Thomas’ sentence.

In the 34 months since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,200 individuals have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol, including more than 400 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, a felony. The investigation remains ongoing.

‘I Got a Job to Do!’: Alabama Maga Trash Gets 10 Months for Attacking Capitol Police​

WASHINGTON – An Alabama magat was sentenced today on a felony charge for his actions during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. His actions and the actions of other short bus retards disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.

Kaleb Dillard, 28, of Mountain Brook, Alabama, was sentenced to 10 months in prison, 12 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $36,238.55 in restitution by U.S. District Judge Jia M. Cobb. Dillard pleaded guilty on July 18, 2023, in the District of Columbia, to assaulting, resisting, or impeding law enforcement officers.

According to court documents, Dillard traveled from his home in Alabama to Washington, D.C., to attend the rally near the Ellipse and illegally entered the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. Dillard, a former Marine, illegally entered the restricted grounds of the Capitol, heading to the East Front of the Capitol. Dillard went to the front of the crowd at the Rotunda Door, where he used a metal tool to smash a window of the doors.

At around 2:26 p.m., Dillard forced his way past officers attempting to close the Rotunda Door and entered the Capitol building. Dillard then approached a U.S. Capitol Police Officer who was attempting to close the doors and stop rioters from entering. Dillard grabbed the officer’s protective vest from behind and threw the officer backward onto the marble floor.

Dillard then helped more rioters enter the Capitol through the Rotunda Door before approaching a second U.S. Capitol Police Officer who was trying to secure the door from the rioters. Dillard repeatedly shoved the second officer away from the doors so more rioters could enter. Unable to move the officer away from the door, Dillard continued to harass him, sticking his fingers in the officer’s face and at one point screaming, “That’s a poor excuse! ‘I got a job to do.’ Give me a f***ing break!”

At around 2:30 p.m., Dillard walked through the Capitol building into the Rotunda, Statuary Hall, and the Statuary Hall Connector. He remained in the Capitol until approximately 2:51 p.m.

Dillard was arrested on Aug. 23, 2022, in Columbiana, Alabama.

This case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama.

This case was investigated by the FBI’s Washington and Birmingham Field Offices, which identified Dillard as #166 on its seeking information photos. Significant assistance was provided by the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.
