I'm curious on
@Luffy assessment on this, I get Tom has the hype right now and UFC is all in being behind him , but facts gives Gane the edge.
Well, I think mostly based off their performances against similar opponents. Gane beat Volkov. Even accounting for the first fight as Gane was injured in the 2nd one, it still went to decision, and Volkov proved to be a challenge either way, as it wasn't totally one sided. Tom beat Volkov quickly exploring Volkov's lack of wrestling and lack of ground game. And Gane didn't seem to have gotten that better in the ground as his 2nd fight with Volkov showed a real bad taste from both when grappling, both being slow, conceding positions too easily, and their takedown being kinda too weak.
The striking I don't think Tom has the advantage but I don't think Gane has either. Gane is a very good striker but not elite like Alex Pereira, he's a good kickboxer but not on an elite level like an Alex Pereira who's one of the best strikers and the best in ufc in the upper weights imo. Gane has powerful punching I guess, but not much. Definitely not that KO artist or hard striker, puncher. Tom isn't a heavy puncher either but his speed can get less skilled strikers in HW quickly to the ground as he leverages his body and momentum to land with a very good timing, so Gane will need to be aware of that possible quick KO. But I think mostly the ground game though. I think the JJ that fought Gane was the last peak JJ we had, that JJ right there was motivated, coming off a 3 years training, had the support and belief of the fans (which motivates him), now I think ppl doubting he will ever fight makes him care less about having that real motivation... But that also exposed a little bit that Gane (and HWs in general) lacks that depth to defend himself so well... And Tom is an exception as it seems in that. Not as good as JJ ofc but he has skills that we don't see much in HW.
Tom seems less motivated than before tho, you'd see him, before, being more excited, calling everyone out. Now he appears more pragmatic, a little risk adverse and talking about his career being close to an ending, projecting 4 fights... So for some reason, maybe the standard fans put him on, and his inactivity, took a mental tax on him that he speaks about the fear of being beaten in front of crowds. That plays a lot too in what Tom from last year would perform, that aura of invincibility which he seems to lack now... he's half guessing more and way more reluctant... Projecting a wayyy shorter career than he would before.
Still tho, Gane hasn't been training seriously as we know of, he was making movies, showing a lack of interest like not even calling Tom openly to a fight, not saying anything, saying Volkov should have won... He doesn't seem committed to UFC, so I think Tom is more complete and is more eager to improve... Although I don't think it will be a blow out like first round and done, I guess that, since Gane has been very inactive too, Tom's overall better skillset in wrestling will overwhelm Gane. Maybe a Jon Jones vs Miocic scenario I think, I don't see Cyril Gane going to the championship rounds in all honesty... I see it as a round 2 or round 3 TKO or submission for Tom. Can be wrong ofc.
I believe Tom and JJ are pretty close still. I think Jones would win if they fight, but I believe it'd be a very tough fight, like a tough 48-47. I see JJ as a step ahead but I see Tom basically around the JJ that beat Stipe, and I think that's more or less how I think of Tom vs Gane... A round 3 TKO or so, mostly one sided. I think it's unlikely for Gane to win or for it to even go a decision.
However, I believe an elite LHW like Alex Pereira, with a fit 244 lbs with low fat mass and most muscles which he showed, with Alex to me being, when fresh, the pinnacle of current LHW (let's see tho vs Ankalaev 2) would have the edge vs Tom and any HW... I think Alex now might be the most dangerous fighter, ppl underrate LHWs, when actually, the new era isn't weak like ppl say, it's just getting better. Many ppl have a tendency to romanticize an old era when any top LHW nowadays like Jiri, Khalil Rountree, Ankalaev would imo take on the old era like Rampage , Lyoto very easily...
And Gus and DC too, I believe (ppl may disagree tho but I don't, I think Gus losing to Smith, JJ saying Thiago Santos was legit the strongest LHW he had faced speaks for a strong new era)... maybe not prime DC but I don't think prime DC would have an easy time either... I think Ankalaev and Pereira would make him #3. So accounting for JJ being slightly above Tom but very close, and Pereira being imo the current best LHW + having a HW natural shape without losing speed... That'd make him vs Tom tougher for Tom than JJ right now and surely than Cyril Gane, for sure. I think Pereira might be the only fighter capable of truly defeating JJ... I hope I'm wrong though as I wouldn't like to see Pereira beating JJ, I'd root for Jones even tho I'm Brazilian and a fan of Alex haha, but... Idk, I've a bad feeling, which is why I wish Jones or Alex fight Tom but I wouldn't like to see Alex vs JJ tbh...
