Cal State Protests Turn Violent at Ben Shapiro Talk

While Shapiro is often wrong, suppressing speech and discussion is a bad thing.

And if people find him repulsive (like I do) then don't go listen to him talk. Simple as that. This whiny crybaby "create a safe space" attitude is disgusting in a very anti intellectual way.

I went some years ago to listen to ari fleischer give a talk shortly after he left as press secretary at a college campus. Nobody cried, nobody protested, people came and listened and asked him questions as part of a public discourse.

I would've been furious if people started screaming at him just bc they hated the bush administration. Naturally Ben Shapiro is like the opposite of a man like fleischer both in intellect and stature, but respect for discourse needs to be the all the same.

People need to grow the fuck up already. The world is a harsh place, trying to bubble wrap table corners so you won't hurt yourself does nothing but make you fucking weak and useless.

Speech was certainly infringed on, albeit not by the government. Come on. You can dislike someone's views and still think it important to protect people's right to dissent and disagree.

If you approve of policies that infringe on basic right, you need to accept that your rights will also be infringed upon. This isn't Right vs Left, it's Right vs Wrong.

I don't like Shapiro. I think his views are bullshit. had I been a student there, I'd have been at this protest just to give the middle finger to the entire Conservative movement. He was able to speak with people protecting him. I make a huge distinction between this and people having to be pleasant about it. If I'm on the streets of Detroit and yell racial slurs at the top of my lungs only to then get knocked out for my efforts, would my right to free speech have been suppressed or would I be simply dealing with the consequences of that speech. That is where our opinions differ.

Nope I even googled Bibis and nothing really came up.

Bibis is the plural of Bibi, Bibi being a nickname for Benjamin as in Benjamin Netanyahu, alpha dog of the Holy Land of Israel.

love when people presume to tell others what to do, how to live their lives, etc.... (and this comes from both parties). Don't like porn, offensive lyrics, violent movies, etc..? word, don't play or watch them than. Too easy.

Wait, they offend you so i can't watch them? Worry about yourself, that's my decision to make.

I'd heisman anyone w/ the swiftness that tried to prevent me from seeing someone speak. It's a public university ffs, the pt besides learning is the open discourse of new ideas and what have you. I went to SDSU, a cal state school, and we had Free Speech steps ffs, where people protested the Iraq war, Mormons/Hare Krishnas would harass you, anti abortion people would be showing you dead fetuses, etc...

Nobody whined, if you didn't like them simply walk past or through if need be. Get off me son

you said you are okay with this protest ( with all the violence and fire alarm ) you said you are okay with kkk ( which is bunch of idiot ) getting stabbed, and that is what i have problem with
Don't misconstrue what I said and start mixing in the fact I said they had free speech and the fact I said I was happy they pulled the fire alarm into the same point and then expect a serious response.

Yes, they had every right to protest, even if it didn't fall in line with your view of how they should have behaved. I also noted that I found it appropriate the actions they took to stop the protest physically. These are two different things. But yes, I found the latter not only acceptable, but amusing.

Stop gaslighting these protestors.

It's kinda like Westboro Baptist (except the BLM has more legit motives behind their actions, ideally at least). They have to right to protest military funerals and what have you, but i certainly don't blame people for say assaulting them for habitual linestepping.

For example, i'm the size of nate diaz almost exactly. If i walked up to a random person much larger than me and said like "F U man", should i really be surprised if i get twopieced? Technically he assaulted me, but i arguably deserved it. Free speech does not protect you from the ramifications (valid or not) of said speech, just saying

Nailed it.

The Freedom of Assembly, correct me if i'm wrong, also not allow you to inhibit others from daily activities. You can't assemble blocking traffic, or if someone runs you over is it really their fault?

What's also humorous is the inference that only people who agree with Shapiro would want to hear what he has to say.

Protesting him speaking is fine. Preventing people from attending and disrupting are not fine.

ya, i'm sure no religious people attend atheist lectures....or vice versa

I feel you man. I'm a pretty strong Atheist, not that i discuss it often, but i took three religious studies classes in college, as well as the history of Islam. Didn't want to speak on things i was really ignorant of, plus i was trying to extrapolate info on the origin, spread, and development of those beliefs over time. Interesting stuff

edit: it also helped me alot in Afghanistan. I had mad convos w/ interpretors, the guy that ran the supply store on base, and high ups in the ANA. Knowing about their religion and their customs was a valuable asset over there. Became friends w/ the shopkeep, cool guy just trying to get by
