Cain Velasquez is Mexican/isn't Mexican Thread ***Threads Merged***

HUH? Where do you see disdain? He's spent his whole life there. The American part is implied. Everyone refers to themselves by their heritage in the US/North America. Cain is still American lol

He has never exhibited pride in the USA whereas he talks endlessly of his love for everything Mexico. I sense that he has very little, if any, pride in the country that has allowed him to earn everything he has.

Of course I could be wrong but until he actually says a remotely positive remark about the USA, I will always see him as someone who prioritizes a foreign land over their true home.

Dana and Lorenzo do not talk about Ireland and Italy every five seconds.

What is the limit for how often you are allowed to talk about your heritage country, according to the redneck opinion? Once a week? Once a month? Is the limit higher for people whose parents come from another country (Cain) vs someone whose grand parents or great grand parents came from another country (Dana)? Please tell us how often everyone is allowed to talk about their own heritage, so we can be so careful not to offend you.

god I can't wait for it to be Sunday so we won't have these threads for at least another 18 months

I'm baffled that people are arguing over whether Cain is Mexican or American. In this country, since we have a large population of citizens who either came from other countries or whose parents immigrated here from other countries, we have traditionally identified them by using their or their parents original country of origin followed by a hyphen and then the word "American." People who came from Ireland or whose parents came from Ireland were called "Irish-Americans", people with Italian heritage were called "Italian-Americans" and people with African heritage are called "African-Americans." Cain is a Mexican-American, and there is no legitimate argument to claim he is otherwise.

Edit: To people saying that Cain only referred to himself as Mexican...well Dana White recently in an interview referred to himself as "Irish" and to Lorenzo as "Italian" and no one seemed to get offended. Why the double standard?

Traditionally? No. That crap is pretty recent.

Quite frankly, it bothers me. I am a first-generation American with parents who fled from Cuba shortly after the Cuban Revolution. I was raised around Cuban family, Cuban food, Cuban music, etc. but I went to American schools, listened to American radio, watched American TV, played American sports, etc. I have always considered myself American and rightly so.

I do not mind people embracing the cultures of their family's country of origin. As a matter of fact, I think it's great and it's part of the American experience. But when someone prioritizes their family's foreign land over the land that allowed their family to flourish and prosper, then I have a problem. Cain should pack his bags and move to Mexico and practice what he preaches.

Amen Brother. Couldn't agree more.

that's how long before Cain fights again after another obligatory injury

I'm not offended by you or anyone else here. I merely have a different opinion than you do. I happen to be a first generation American much like Cain. I embrace this country and I love it as opposed to the country in which my parents and grandparents immigrated from and I think that it is very rational to have that mindset.

Maybe because those other guys dont have "white pride" tattooed on their chests?

I think it has people's panties in a bunch mostly because it's an obvious marketing grab.

You're right that I have shown nothing to indicate that he lacks pride in the US. But I also assure you that you cannot show me anything indicating that he DOES have pride in the US.

Does it not bother you when immigrants enter and live in your country and blatantly use it for its advantages while simultaneously claiming their former country to be the country that they truly love? If not, then we clearly have differing opinions.
Meh, even if for the sake of argument we presume he is more neutral about the U.S., what do I care about what place has first claim to his heart? Bottom line is that he is a contributing member of society who also happens to be very good at something I enjoy watching.

He has a job, he pays his taxes, he stays out of trouble, and he excels at what he does. Sounds to me like someone you should be happy to have as a fellow citizen

Some Sherdog Americans are far too easily rustled by a dude showing pride in his ethnic roots.

Get some perspective.

Lmao. The yanks need one of their own as a heavyweight champ in MMA coz it ain't happening any time soon in boxing. I'm a born New zealander with both my parents and all my gran parents being born in Ireland. I have a Celtic tattoo on my back this doesn't mean I hate New Zealand or turned my back on my country.

You have a Celtic tattoo of a man dick? Is that some weird auto correct error or am I not making the same connection as you? Whose dick exactly?

Heavyweight boxing has been dead to us Americans since the days of Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield. And it's not because of a foreign champ. It's because the heavyweight fighters nowadays suck.
