Cain Velasquez is Mexican/isn't Mexican Thread ***Threads Merged***

He doesn't have to do anything. All I'm saying is that it would be pretty refreshing if he would at least acknowledge his American upbringing. He just seems to have disdain for being American.

I seriously doubt he doesn't say Mexican-American because he has disdain for America. I just think he assumes the American part is implied. Pretty much every Mexican-American I know (including myself) just refer to themselves as Mexican, the American part just goes without saying.

This incident in particular does not show he lacks pride in the US. It is the other countless examples of Cain's behavior that does. As far as I know, he has never stated that he was proud to be American. He has, on the other hand, stated how proud he is to be Mexican. And he's done so countless times.

On a recent Embedded episode, he explicitly stated that he is "Mexican" in response to Werdum's allegation that Cain is an American who thinks he's a Mexican. He once again did not acknowledge his American upbringing.

He brings a Mexican flag to the ring. He dedicates his victories to the Mexican people. I could go on and on.
Right...because he identifies himself more by his heritage than his nationality. You have shown nothing to indicate he lacks pride in the U.S. It would be one thing if he made derogatory comments or something like that.

I guess more importantly, why does it bother anyone if he sees himself as Mexican first and American second? Is there some type of winner-take-all scenario or some reason suddenly it's important to people that someone is pro nationality first over heritage? I think most people with a strong cultural connection would relate more to heritage.

Didn't everyone call out Marcus Davis when he tried to go all Irish on everyone?????? I personally thought he was a clown trying to appease people he obviously knows nothing about (even though his family tree is from there) and my dads side of the family is very Irish.

How is Cain's charade any different?

Literally every first generation American does what Cain does lol

He's American.

He's American and Mexican. He and others can call him whichever one. Are you saying he cannot call himself Mexican at all?

why would you care for his pride at all

Quite frankly, it bothers me. I am a first-generation American with parents who fled from Cuba shortly after the Cuban Revolution. I was raised around Cuban family, Cuban food, Cuban music, etc. but I went to American schools, listened to American radio, watched American TV, played American sports, etc. I have always considered myself American and rightly so.

I do not mind people embracing the cultures of their family's country of origin. As a matter of fact, I think it's great and it's part of the American experience. But when someone prioritizes their family's foreign land over the land that allowed their family to flourish and prosper, then I have a problem. Cain should pack his bags and move to Mexico and practice what he preaches.

because he doesn't speak Spanish. Makes no sense to put something on your chest you don't understand.

So fucking what? The guy you're responding to is right, I went to BWW for Brock vs Cain and it was packed with Mexicans who went nuts when Cain won. Why do so many morons take such personal offense at him embracing his heritage?

Mexicans at a BWW.

BWAHAHAHA, Cain is the next Oscar De La Hoya, or Roger "Viva La Raza" Huerta

Why not? That's what they do in the U.S.

But the most accurate description is American of Mexican descent.

You're right that I have shown nothing to indicate that he lacks pride in the US. But I also assure you that you cannot show me anything indicating that he DOES have pride in the US.

Does it not bother you when immigrants enter and live in your country and blatantly use it for its advantages while simultaneously claiming their former country to be the country that they truly love? If not, then we clearly have differing opinions.

A little off the point, why do people focus so much on their heritage when they are drinking? You often hear a drunk person talking about their cultural heritage in relation to how much they can drink.

lol, it's a good excuse: "I can't help it, it's in my blood"

Dana White recently referred to himself as Irish and to Lorenzo as Italian. No one said they were offended. When white Americans do it is ok, but when Mexican-Americans do it, it is offensive?

Dana and Lorenzo do not talk about Ireland and Italy every five seconds.

He just seems to have disdain for being American.

HUH? Where do you see disdain? He's spent his whole life there. The American part is implied. Everyone refers to themselves by their heritage in the US/North America. Cain is still American lol
