It hurts your point because you looked at what Bruce Lee was doing and said "THAT'S NOT BOXING, HE CLEARLY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING!" and then people have posted that it's a common exercise that Louis and Tyson are filmed doing, and not actually boxing. And then others have given proof that Bruce Lee did infact box in school, and was very successful at it.
I must have missed the part of the Tyson vid where he did anything like Lee.
Lee boxed in HS, great, I know nothing about his opponents or any other info necessary to determine how skilled he really was.
I do not think Bruce Lee could beat a top 10 HW because he's not a heavyweight. And to be honest, I don't think most of his fans believe that either.
I don't think a lot of his fans on this site believe that, but out of the common populace many do.
If Bruce Lee ever competed in MMA, he would be a LW/FW. Now, could he beat a top LW/FW? No. He was an actor, not a full time fighter. However, I do think he had the tools and the ability TO fight in the UFC. And that's pretty big praise.
If you look back at my OP, you'll see that I didn't slander Lee, other than to say his bag training was embarassingly bad, I did say:
I respect Lee for being a physical speciman, and his study of martial arts. I think it's great that he realized there were a lot of flaws in Eastern MAs and wanted to adapt different styles. However, the legend of his fighting prowess is clearly better than his actual fighting prowess. I think it's hilarious that many feel he would be able to beat any current MMA fighter of any division.
Which I stand by. Particularly the bolded part. His legend has surpassed his actual ability.
I don't really know what you're trying to disprove here. No one here thinks he could beat Brock Lesnar in a cage fight. We just respect Bruce Lee as a really good fighter. Champions in all different combat sports liked to spar with him on the regular, so how bad could he be?
Some people, again not people here, do think that he would smoke Lesnar in a fight, or anyone in a fight. After yet another conversation with his delusional fans I made this thread.
I respect Lee as a martial artist. I don't know that I respect him as a fighter because I have seen little proof from neutral sources that he was a good fighter. How do we know he had a chin? Or the mental edge necessary to survive a beating and keep going?
As far as sparring with other professionals that's great. I'm glad people liked sparring with him. That still doesn't prove to me that he is one of the greatest fighters, let alone the greatest fighter, to ever live. Many people feel that he was/is.
