Bruce Lee on the Heavy Bag

No. Bruce Lee was about fighting dirty. He clearly mentions in his writings that he is against fighting with rules. Eye gouging, groin shots, biting etc. He would have thought MMA to be limited in scope

- The old excuse?
To deadly to fight.

Say all you want about Bruce Lee, here is the truth of the matter. Bruce Lee died almost 40yrs ago and here it is 40yrs later and his teachings, philosophy and presence as a martial artist still inspires a 5+ page discussion on a sherdog forum.............. I'd say that is proof enough that his legacy as a martial artist is without a doubt transcendent.

The best coaches or teachers were never the best fighters or players.

Kids grow up... He was just an actor who trained martial arts...
He didn't fight competitively nor wasn't street fighter, he was just martial arts enthusiast and tv actor. Thats it.

In REAL fight I bet he would went chaotic brawling like a crazy cat.

But he was great inspiration for generation of real fighters.

This.

The reason I posted the video, complete with sarcastic comment, is precisely because you say stuff like that. "This small clip, IMO, doesn't look great." But you know for a fact that Jack Dempsey was and still is a legend of boxing. A truly dominant champion. So perhaps your view that the bag work is not impressive is flawed. And since the bag work here is not entirely dissimilar from Bruce's above, it should be evident that, in this regard, you have no room to speak about Bruce's evident technique.

Exactly what I thought when I watched it. And for evidence here's Dempsey himself. There are definite similarities! Bruce if he was good at anything was brilliant at picking up and imitating the styles of particular fighters and arts that he studied. His savate for instance is very stylistic and authentic looking for someone that hadn't trained in it his whole life. Anyway here's Dempsey for comparison, notice him on the heavy bag with his awful technique, hands by his side just slugging away

bruce already has a martial arts school before he bacame an actor.

go watch bruce the legend documentary..

well he has gone a long way in martial arts, he was ahead of his
generation, he was a pioneer and a true martial artist

His accomplishments aside, there are people who overrate him a tad too much. I knew people who swore Bruce Lee would kick the shit out of guys like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson because those are just "sports figures" while Lee was a "martial artist."

You have no idea what he was doing in this vid. He was constantly trying new techniques he would think of himself. If someone filmed me trying out shit I just learned or shit I thought might work it would look very amateurish. Also consider the martial arts he practiced were very different (strike angles etc.) then what ppl see in mma.

I'm not hanging on his nuts, I'm just stating the obvious.

He is power punching a 75 lb heavybag. He certainly is not punching it in an orthodox way, such as making sure his arms are straight when connecting and there is no snap in these punches. That is not to say he cannot do this.

Bruce Lee was a magician with camera angles, footwork and displaying form; but anything he's done on screen would not be a good indication of how he fought. Lee was a sloppy brawler with retarded strength.

I could bang Lee out.

Well, of course it would be ridiculous to claim that man who topped out at 130, had a rudimentary training in the ground arts at best, and no real training in boxing or muay thai could beat any man alive in a cage match. But honestly, I think if Bruce Lee were alive today, he'd be at least in the top 30 should he hypothetically have chosen to be.

everyone here who thinks they could have taken bruce, would get wrecked by a 125lb guy if you actually tried. 9/10 you would chicken out before any engaging

I'm 271lbs.

I highly doubt Lee would want any of it. Ya.

and you probably move like a stick in the mud, he would probably tap dance around you until you were out of breath and 1 inch donkey punch your ass into oblivion

The 1-inch punch is bullsh!t.
It's more of a theory and parlor trick than an actual combat move.

Bruce Lee against anyone untrained in martial arts? He'd win more than 90 percent of the time.

Bruce Lee against anyone with a little MMA knowledge? Bruce Loses.

You do realize Bruce fought ordinary guys with no skill; right?

yeah, the point is that the 1 inch punch is bs, and he would still make it work on you...even with all of the ufc you have watched, you still lose

i laughed.

gene lebell said lee was legit so that's that.

You know nothing about me.
I'm 2-0. May not be that big of a deal to someone like yourself, but I at least have those credentials until I'm beaten or at least am not able to fight any longer.

The funny part is, you're defending a man who in his own right possessed a good knowledge of martial arts, Lee made some fantastic movies and probably the best Kung Fu movies ever. Yes, he was in tremendous shape and was lightning fast. Fair enough. But if you're going to say that Lee was/is better than any modern day fighter in MMA; you're obviously mistaken.
He had great ideas about eliminating what wasn't essential to an art, thus utilizing those moves and creating a form in the manner of hybrid fighting. (almagam)

He won some boxing matches, some karate tournaments, but against who?

There was plenty of competition for him in those days whether it were yesteryear catch wrestlers or kickboxers (perhaps not many known to us because the sport was relatively new then)...and yet, who did he defeat?
I couldn't consider any claim of his feats as credible other than his physical prowess.

Keep in mind that even the most unskilledand green MMA fighter has a stand up guard for stand up and the same for ground. Even if they're taught a little about Ground game, it takes a tremendous amount of power away from someone once they're taken down. I would know.
