Bruce Lee on the Heavy Bag

I've also heard it said that Bruce Lee thought competition wasn't the same as fighting and his ideas were to be applied in real life fights. Like, what's the most effective way to disable this guy, instead of what's the best way to get a win in the rules and guidelines of a sport.

Just taking Gene Lebell's word on Bruce Lee being legit is enough for me.

It's not his movies people should base on, it's his training, philosophy on martial arts at the time (when there are a lot of really one-dimensional martial arts), and his personal notes that should be looked over, especially on having an open mind and how he gradually discarded ineffective moves in favor of more effective ones from different martial arts. He did a lot up research on his own and he brought up a shitload of good points from it. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that he may have contributed to modern MMA a lot more than we think (even if he may have unwillingly made McDojos crop up everywhere during the kung fu craze). It's just too bad that he only discovered grappling really late in his life, and had started embracing judo techniques and the ground game shortly before his death. He supposedly said that it's hard to sell these grappling techniques in a movie, because a lot of people wouldn't understand it at all as compared to a high kick to the face.

He's quite a physical specimen too, it also wouldn't be too much to say that he can be quite an MMA fighter if he was born in this generation. Heck, he might have made MMA evolve faster too.

he is just swing hard, not working or trying to show technique in the video.
seen him spar before, very fast, very controlled and elusive.

Not criticizing your post but this video is such a big amount of bullshit, yeah a trained martial artist can hit hard, but no they cannot kill anyone with a punch to the chest, well maybe some 90 year old comatose cancer patient.
Comparing his punch to a car crash is also pretty stupid, what do they measured? Pressure, force? All of this is very badly used in these pop science shows.
Car crashes kill your for a variety of reasons, not just because of the amount of force.
You can generate a lot of pressure on a test dummy by pushing against it with a small object or a finger or a knuckle, yet it wouldn't hurt anybody.
The speed and mass behind a strike is what matter mostly, and this monk certainly doesn't have much mass and his punch didn't look all that fast, and that's what happens when you punch from 1 inch away.
Any 170lbs fighter can probably hit a lot harder than this dude and they don't go around killing people when they connect cleanly.

I believe that is the over-sized punching bag that Bob Wall bought Bruce Lee as a joke.

Bob Wall Interview | cityonfire.com | Asian Film Reviews | Movie News

Bob Wall: And so I went as a joke, made him a 300 pound bag. I don’t think there’s a bag bigger than that. And so I stuffed it and called Bruce up in Bel Air and he had a Porshe, and I said “Hey Bruce, why don’t you come on down, I made you a man-sized bag” and he came and Joe and a bunch of our students all hid, I got on the phone, pretending to be on the phone, and I said “Yeah Bruce, go ahead and throw it in the back, its in there hanging up” and so he walked in and the expression on his face would have been great to have on film, and we all fell over when he saw the size of bag…

That's not a 300 pound bag. Not even close. That looks like a lighter bag, not even 75 pounds.

You can see in slow motion that Bruce Lee is not leaning in to the punch.

It's a straight punch maximized by an explosive burst of energy which requires proper technique and physical conditioning.

I didn't say he leaned into it. I said it was a pushing punch, which it is, and can be CLEARLY seen in the video I posted. Not to mention the "victim" is standing perfect square, which makes him easy to knock over anyway.

That Anderson Silva punch you showed is not a Lee style one inch punch. It's also pretty obvious that Forrest was done with Silva at that point and took a chance to get out of the fight.

The fight with Wong:

Wong was a timid, puny and less than qualified opponent. Here's the most plausible story I've heard of the "fight" itself. Lee apparently knocked Wong down with a straight blast and did not jump on him. Wong got up and ran with Lee chasing him around the room, trying to pound the back of Wong's head with closed fists. (Lee was inexperienced and didn't know better than to hit someone on the back of the noggin with fists.) Lee's hands became painfully swollen and he was gasping for air. Finally, he tackled Wong, knocking him to the floor, where he pinned his arms and sat on him until Wong "said uncle." Hardly an epic battle. By all accounts, Lee's less than consummate performance caused him to re-evaluate both his martial art and his level of physical conditioning. This variation of a schoolyard tussle eventually lead to a worldwide revolution in how martial arts and taught and practiced. I hope that this response is of some help to you in separating the myths of Lee from the reality.

Bruce Lee : The Divine Wind

I'm not trying to destroy Lee. I respect what he did, which is make martial arts movies and make martial arts much more popular. He was an amazing athlete.

He is not the best fighter to ever live.

Also, you guys are talking about MMA as if it is the epitome of fighting. MMA does not have a good track record of good technical striking. Only in this sport can someone come in with 9 months of training and make the top 10 list. So cut the crap about Bruce Lee and MMA fighters.

Which fighter had 9 months of training and made the top 10 list?

not true... bruce lee would have loved mma

No. Bruce Lee was about fighting dirty. He clearly mentions in his writings that he is against fighting with rules. Eye gouging, groin shots, biting etc. He would have thought MMA to be limited in scope

maybe the posters here in the forum are better fighters than bruce lee? because they said it with their mouths  then they should start their own schools then because they think they are better than bruce.

Big difference between being a better fighter, or a better coach/businessman/actor

The very first UFC events and some vale tudo would have been more to his preference, but yeah, you are absolutely right.

"When you're talking about fighting, as it is, with no rules, well then, baby you'd better train every part of your body!"

-Bruce Lee

"it is easy to criticize and break down the spirit of others..but to know yourself takes maybe a lifetime" - bruce lee

The one inch punch is far from a parlor trick, I was one inch punched by Dan Inosanto (bruce lee's best friend) and my chest hurt for a day and he didn't even go full force. If you turn the one inch punch into a push then you're doing it wrong. Go train a day in your life before you start throwing out your opinions as facts similar to a toddler spitting out its baby food.

I have no reason to argue with ignorant retards that don't know shit about martial arts. Read Tao of Jeet Kune Do and if anyone trains striking then that book is invaluable. You're telling me Bruce wrote that and didn't know how to fight?

There are alot of arm chair nerds in this thread that have the audacity to discredit the master.

You have no idea what he was doing in this vid. He was constantly trying new techniques he would think of himself. If someone filmed me trying out shit I just learned or shit I thought might work it would look very amateurish. Also consider the martial arts he practiced were very different (strike angles etc.) then what ppl see in mma.

I'm not hanging on his nuts, I'm just stating the obvious.
