BREXIT Discussion, v4.0: The Back-Pedaling

Canadian media snobs bash Brexit voters with fact-free insults

The more I think about the EU abolishing English as an official language the less sense it makes. I mean, yeah, it makes sense from a "rules" standpoint, but it seems spiteful rather than logical.

-It's the only language spoken in all EU countries, in all levels of government, and in all businesses.
-It IS the international language of business.
-Are they going to implement a two tiered system for negotiations? One in the EU and one internationally?
-It's become the "universal" language in Europe since the fall of the iron curtain.

Voter stats are coming in..
only 36% of voters under 25 turned out to vote ,who were eligible . Its also showed that a majority of remain voters were over age 65...

so much for all the lies about the vote..

The French have been trying for years to make their language the lingua franca of Europe.

No dice though, if they want to eliminate English as one of the official languages of the E.U, the vote will have to be unanimous:

European Commission rejects claims English will not be EU language

Irish MEPs might have to brush up on their Irish language skills after it was claimed that English would no longer retain its status as a working language in the EU following the Brexit referendum vote.

“English is our official language because it has been notified by the UK. If we don’t have the UK, we don’t have English,” Polish MEP and chair of the European Parliament’s constitutional affairs committee Danuta Hübner told a news conference on the legal consequences of the British referendum to leave the EU on Monday.

A statement issued on behalf of the European Commission Representation in Ireland rejected Ms Hübner’s claim.

The European Commission Representation said it “noted” the report that English would cease to be an official language of the EU but said it was “incorrect”.

“The Council of Ministers, acting unanimously, decide on the rules governing the use of languages by the European institutions. In other words, any change to the EU Institutions’ language regime is subject to a unanimous vote of the Council, including Ireland,” the statement said,

In 1958, the then European Economic Community named Dutch, French, German and Italian - the languages of the first six countries to join the organisation - as its official languages.

Since then, as more countries have become part of the EU, the number of official languages has increased to 24 official languages.

While Irish received full status in the EU in 2007 it remained marginalised due to a derogation which meant that EU institutions were not obliged to provide full translation services in the language.

The Government announced last year that it would apply to the EU council of ministers for an end to the derogation and Irish is now due to become a fully fledged official working language by 2022.

While English is the most spoken language in Europe, and an official language in three member states - Ireland, England and Malta - Irish is Ireland’s official EU nominated language and Maltese is Malta’s official language.

Ms Hübner said under EU rules member states can notify only one official language each which means that Malta or Ireland cannot also request English as an official language without first making a change to EU rules which would require a unanimous decision in the EU Council.

However, she was confident such a change could take place.

“I personally believe that we will find unanimity to change the rule on this ... and then we will have from the Irish not only Gaelic but also English or from the Maltese not only Maltese but also English,” she said.

Ms Hübner is not alone in her view that a Brexit might have implications for the English language as a working language in Europe. French Jean-Luc Mélenchon leftwing MEP and French presidential candidate tweeted on Monday that “English can no longer be the third working language of the European Parliament”

Some of Ireland’s 11 MEPs would have to brush up on their language skills if they were to work through the medium of Irish but others, including Ireland South MEPs Seán Kelly and Liadh Ní Riada, would have no such problems.

Mr Kelly is a fluent Irish speaker while native speaker Ní Riada went on a stailc teanga or language strike for a week during Seachtain na Gaeilge last year in protest at the derogation and the exclusion of the Irish language within EU institutions.

Those MEPs who wish to practice their Irish are in luck however as they will be joined in Europe by 62 Irish-language translators and 14 language assistants once the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the European Personnel Selection Office complete a recently advertised recruitment drive brought about by the end of the derogation.

Brexit Summit in Brussels, Day 2:
EU leaders to meet without David Cameron

European Union leaders are to begin the second day of their summit in Brussels - but without the UK after it last week voted to leave the bloc.

On Tuesday British PM David Cameron told the other 27 leaders that trade and security co-operation would be vital whatever the future links.

Germany's Angela Merkel urged the EU to "respect the result" of the UK vote.

But she and other leaders renewed their call for Britain to set out plans for leaving as soon as possible.

They insist there can be no negotiation before the UK has formally invoked Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which will trigger the withdrawal talks.

Tuesday's meeting in Brussels was Mr Cameron's final EU summit, after he announced his intention to stand down by October.

The 27 other leaders will shortly gather in the Belgian capital to discuss the future without the UK. This has not happened for more than 40 years.

The BBC's Chris Morris in Brussels says there will be calls for unity and for reform, and promises will need to be put into practice quickly because the UK referendum has shaken Europe to the core.

On Tuesday, Mr Cameron said the rest of the EU wanted to have the "closest possible" relationship with the UK after Brexit.

But he said immigration was a "great concern" among UK voters and squaring this with access to the EU single market would be a "huge challenge".

In Brussels, German politicians insisted the UK cannot "cherry-pick" aspects of the EU.

Mrs Merkel stressed that the UK must accept free movement if it wanted to retain access to the single market.

"We all regretted the result and made clear that the legal procedure must be that the UK invokes Article 50," she said. "Mr Cameron said he would hand it over to the new government to do. We all agreed that before that point, there can be no formal or informal negotiations."

She added: "We can see no way to turn this around. It's not a time for wishful thinking, but of contemplating the reality."

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the UK did not have "months to meditate" on activating Article 50.

"If someone from the Remain camp will become British prime minister, this has to be done in two weeks after his appointment," he said.

"If the next British PM is coming from the Leave campaign, it should be done the day after his appointment."

Mr Cameron told reporters the discussions had been "calm, constructive and purposeful".

He said there was "universal respect" for the UK's decision to leave despite a "tone of sadness and regret".

While the EU wanted more information about the UK's negotiating plans going forward and a "clear model appearing", he said there was an acknowledgement that this would take some time and "no great clamour" for talks to begin straight away.

They are already looking at ways to stop the Brexit. The world is showing us how much our votes don't matter and we are basically slaves.

This right here doesn't sound good for the UK, and if I get her meaning right it pisses me off. I want to know what she means by "free movement"?

A Great Victory for Love & Nationalism Over Hate & Globalism

Haha who is this dude!? He looks and sounds like the bad guy from die hard.

The Golden One makes Glorious videos. I would highly recommend checking out his YouTube channel.

"Get massive, get used to violence, acquire weapons if you can, organize yourselves in groups and most importantly, educate your mind so that you can bring intellectual destruction towards the leftists and liberals."

This is very sad. Think about how many soldiers died in those wars, so that their children and grandchildren would grow up in a Britain that was not occupied by Germans.

And now, their very descendants want to sign away their country, government powers, and bank of England to a foreign union that is spearheaded by the very people their forefathers fought. And it's not even to avoid going to war, but rather because they're afraid they'll lose some money. We've failed to parent these generations.

So instead of being friends with our former enemies and being a united Europe we should split up again and continue the 3000+ years of fighting that preceded the EU? Okay cool.

Who are "they" you're speaking of?

Certainly not the E.U, they're trying to get Britain to invoke Article 50 and get out as soon as possible.

Certainly not the current British government, with the Prime Minister ready to step down so his replacement, probably someone from the Leave camp, can start the process.

So what exactly is this "world" that's "showing you how much your votes don't matter and you are basically slaves"?

I didn't know giving up your independence as a nation, your BOE holdings, and control of your military constituted friendship these days.

A systemic takeover is taking place, and you erroneously believe that it is in your favor.

The Media’s Disgraceful Brexit Meltdown

It has proven difficult to count the number of ways in which the press has blown this story, so I will focus on just two of the many crucial errors that have caught my attention.

The first is the press’s peculiar belief that the “Leave” side won because its voters are stupid and impetuous, and because they don’t know what’s good for themselves...

The press’s second big mistake has been to buy into the absurd idea that the British voted to leave the EU because they hate immigrants or non-white people. Over and over again, I have seen it argued that this referendum was primarily about “xenophobia” or “anti-immigrant” sentiment, and that opposition to unchecked immigration is, by definition, racist.

One of the great failings of the American media class – both in this case, and more broadly — is its refusal to accept that national sovereignty is just as important to people as is material wealth, and that the average person’s objections to unrestricted immigration are rooted in quotidian concerns rather than racism.

At the Virginia ratifying convention of 1788, Patrick Henry instructed the electors, “You are not to inquire how your trade may be increased, nor how you are to become a great and powerful people, but how your liberties can be secured; for liberty ought to be the direct end of your Government.” Clearly, a considerable number of Brits still agree.

In fairness, the EU would actually prefer the UK to ignore or rerun the referendum. All their saying is that if you're not going to do that then get on with it.

I think there is something in the idea that the EU rolls on whatever people vote based on the fact that most the referendums on the treaties, constitution and Euro have either been ignored or rerun when they've got against more EU integration.

In fairness, the EU would actually prefer the UK to ignore or rerun the referendum. All their saying is that if you're not going to do that then get on with it.

Reality is this: The only two countries that want the U.K to "ignore or rerun the referendum" are Scotland and Northern Ireland, and they're part of the U.K.

On the very morning after the Brexit vote, every single members of the EU (including the British government) have already accepted the fact that the U.K is leaving.

Absolutely no one in the world out there disrespected the vote result, despite many being sadden to see it happened. That somber sentiment from leaders all around the world has already been covered extensively in the very first post of the Brexit Discussion v3, something I'm sure everyone here have already read.

As mentioned in multiple articles covering the Brexit Summit in Brussels in this very thread, absolutely NO ONE in the E.U is trying to stop the U.K from leaving, and every single one of them are actually wishing for it to happen as soon as possible so the market wouldn't be further affected by any more uncertainties.

In the article posted directly above his dumb post, Angela Merkel sums it up best when she said "We all regretted the result and made clear that the legal procedure must be that the UK invokes Article 50" and "We can see no way to turn this around. It's not a time for wishful thinking, but of contemplating the reality."

David Cameron himself concluded after the meeting that "there was universal respect for the UK's decision to leave, despite a tone of sadness and regret".

Therefore, I must conclude that @DynamicLoosener's ridiculous assertion that "The world is showing us how much our votes don't matter and we are basically slaves" is utter bullshit.

There is only one thing I cannot tolerate in the threads that I meticulously puts together: idiots jumping into our discussion table to say stupid shit that contradicts reality, simply because they couldn't comprehend the information presented right on front of their very eyes.

I'm a fair TS, however, so I'm giving him one more chance to explain to the rest of us what is this "world" that supposedly want to ignore the British people's votes and treat them as "slaves", before the curb-stomping begins:

They are already looking at ways to stop the Brexit. The world is showing us how much our votes don't matter and we are basically slaves.
