I haven't seen the film yet, but I'm glad that the consensus seems to be that, at the very least, 2049 isn't a complete disgrace compared to the original (one of my all-time favorites).
Neither are a disgrace...the irony is we live in a vapid culture...discussing whether there is more than this disturbs a lot of people...

The thing is, the original Blade Runner had one of the best endings in movie history. It is as close to perfection as you can get. Leave it alone. I'm sure this movie probably is good but to think there is more to add after the Batty speech? Come on. You can't top that. Anything else will be lesser. No matter how good this movie is.

Same shit as UFC. Everything is diluted now.

Not this. This is more not more of the same.

An old Harrison Ford tells me otherwise. He retired and doesn't cut it in action movies anymore.

It is like when Sean Connery played his dad in Indiana Jones.

I don't want to see Han Solo as an old man. Or Deckard. Guys like that don't grow to old age.

@TheRuthlessOne said something along these lines as well. I did went looking for some information but didn't find anything.

So what's the story here?
He's got a rep, whether deserved or no, of giving good reviews to hype a film.
I recall seeing something on YouTube, try "stuckman cries about RLM" , he got upset at some criticism they made regarding it.
It seems deserved, but I've only looked at five of his reviews in the past year.

It seems like before people talk shit they would have something to base it on other than mere speculation.
It's largely based on how other YouTube reviewers see it. There's a bitchy aspect to it... But I can see why his respect among his peers has taken a hit. It feels a bit like when Mencia started taking heat for lifting material from other stand ups.
Some of it is maybe so, maybe not, but other things seem more obvious.

I haven't kept up with it enough to elaborate without going through it again.

I just checked my IMAX...It's only 2d...Is there 3d Imax?

Also, I wanted to see this next weekend but I didn't see it playing next weekend on IMAX....Does IMAX films really come off that easily? or do they simply not have the schedule yet? Is IMAX worth it?

so I have read all of your posts here (about BD)...you have a pretty good knowledge of PKD...stop posturing...

Total Recall remake was complete garbage, didnt watch new Blade Runner

It wasn't complete garbage. On its own without comparison to the original it is more than decent. Everyone in love with Total Recall saw it when they were young. That skews everyone's perception. I thought Running Man was hot shit. when I was 9. It's good too but not great. The original Total Recall was about as perfect as a movie you could make for young boys.

I couldn't even pay attention to the rest of the movie because I was laughing so hard.

But in seriousness, James Cameron discussed why he cut the "Terminator learning to smile" scene from T2. Mostow and the makers of T3 were well aware of this, and went far, far beyond that degree of silliness and "Terminator as a clown."
... was that scene longer than what ended up in T2, the "We'll work on it" semi smile?

JC is pretty much always right when he leaves something on the cutting room floor.

I do think there is sometimes a tendancy for Hollywood to overestimate the pull of something that's popular within the industry and with online cinephiles. Other recent examples for me would be Tron Legacy and Ghost in the Shell, neither nearly as popular with mainstream US audiences as I think studios believed and weren't that successful overall dispite actually being good films in there own right IMHO.

I thought the budget for this film would be more in the $50-80 million range, at $150 million it might be a bit more touch and go whether it gets into serious profit. In its favour though it does seem a more conventional film than the original, indeed I spose the high budget might well explain that.

And we saw it the other way with Hollywood completely underestimating IT by giving it a strict $35 million budget and it ends up pulling in over twice what Blade Runner will do in the opening weekend despite having 4 times less the budget.

Anecdotally speaking I was thinking about seeing Blade Runner today in 2D IMAX and decided not to because the early show was pretty crowded(almost all prime seats bought up in advance). The other screens like the 3D were empty though.

the original BR is overrated and kinda corny. at least it was based off PKD. the new one was a replica of the old. it didn't feel original. the whole story had no suspense for me. plus I could tell the pulse and beat as it was happening due in part to the trailer and the writing. for instance, Spoiler : the scene where he finds the horse builds up to the revelation but the audience already knows it's going to happen before the main character even does. it was alright but nothing new or groundbreaking. very ploddingly slow. tried too hard with aesthetics and music. the action scenes weren't anything to be amazed by nor memorable unlike say NoCountryForOldMen. it's a really good high budget B-Scifi movie but as for something new and innovative, I didn't think it was.

Same reason mumble rap sells tons while actual musicians have to work as cooks and construction workers while not on tour.

Life isn’t fair.

Roger Deakins is the cinematographer for this movie(He's brilliant and worked on movies like Sicario, No Country for Old Men, Shawshank Redemption). Anyway he said the movie was shot for the purpose of 2D non-IMAX and that's the format that they choose to show at the premiere. With that said I think most importantly is making sure you see it in a decent screen which can really depend on the theater. If 2D IMAX has the best sound system in your area I'd probably see it that say despite how the movie was shot.

Saw the Final Cut 1982 flick this week for the first time, and really enjoyed it. Went into this one with pretty high expectations, and it met the hype.

Thing I really liked about the first flick, was the bad guys (Not even really bad tbh) weren't trying to take over the world or some shit. It was everyone trying to figure out who they are, and their place in all of it. Even though the stakes are much higher in 2049, it still has that personal element to it. You're invested in the characters.

Visually, one of the best I've ever seen, paying the extra 5 bucks for Imax was totally worth it. One of the few movies I would watch with the sound off, it was that beautiful to look at.

One thing that bothered me, well, not even me, but some people I went with, if you haven't seen the original, a lot of it goes over your head. For good or bad, (Good imo) they made this one for the fans. I hope they get rewarded for it.
