Just a correction on Batman v Superman. The favorable early reactions came from fans, not critics. When the critics embargo was lifted, they were mostly negative.

Yea agreed they don't always hype the movie.. yea I'm sure some of them are on the pay in one way or another to get invited to stuff and rub elbows etc but not all of them.

Now take all reactions with care but you can make an idea in the end it always comes down to what each of us feel about them.

I think it's worth noting that vilenueve is pretty fucking boss in general. I trust these reviews strictly on the merit that he is directing

Fair point. How do positive pre-reviews and tweets get past the embargo? I thought any professional official opinions would be shielded until it's time. Or, are those opinions only allowed when they're positive?

I think you can kinda post a emoji, thumbs up for a big movie.

Even say a few words for a medium property before the limit.

Especially if you are positive who will come after you if you say 'wink wink this one is a keeper'.

When have these critic reactions ever been a clear indication of what's to come? I remember those early reactions said that Batman vs Superman was going to be the best superhero movie we had seen, and look at what happened. It makes things suspect when they all use similar language in their early praise.

Those were fan reactions for BvS. Essentially studio plants. These are industry critics and writers, they are known quantities.
We have this discussion every time a big movie comes out. Every time.

Yea but that type of movie is just you know eat popcorn, clap, enjoy .. go home wake up and forget what you saw xD it is just that, fast food of the movie world.

No one really judges a Fast and Furious movie in the same standard he does other movies when they expect more out of them.. if we start to analyze the last Furious movie we will get sad on humanity or something.

With a mindless popcorn action flick is it is entertaining ? did it had some charisma and fun then good recommend the movie.. that is it with them.

No one will praise them with more then that.

If every critic followed this logic though then the critics that followed the pre-release critics would have also all been positive on the film. But no, many critics were negative. So where were these negative reactions among the pre-release reviews?

I can give you a more recent example. . . Annabelle: Creation. It sat at a 100% on RT for SEVERAL weeks because, once again, ALL of the pre-release critics were overwhelmingly positive on the film. And now that the rest of the critics have had a chance to weigh in? 68%.

It's a pattern that has played out over and over.

My sister has seen it and mentioned it's a absolute epic and that I can't miss it... like I had any reason to not to go see it! See knows the original is one of my favorite films. The last time she told me something similar was when The Dark Knight came out so this has me even more excited for the movie. I'll mention the fact she's been working as a attorney for Warner Bro for like 12-13 years now. That being said she knows almost everything that WB's is doing and planning to do and never tells me shit, never utters a detail. Yet she writes most of and has everyone working on projects sign the NDA's all parties involved agree to.

I can't wait... Ten days and I'm headed to Dublin to see this with the gf. She actually really liked the first film. We watched it a few weeks ago.

She's a Irish girl that grew up in Australia and has that fantastic accent. She's gorgeous and a sweetheart to top it off. ;)

The trailers all looked meh. I figured this thing was gonna be a dud for sure. Interesting that it's getting some solid reviews. I think I may as well check it out and see if it's really as good as they say. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Not sure, maybe since it is a smaller movie with a distinct genre all the horror fan critics went out early to it and liked it then all the rest eventually saw it and it gets to the current number.

I fallow IMDB and Metacritic more and I can usually get a decent feel for what to expect.

I think the simplest explanation is probably the correct one:

The studios provide those critics they know they can trust to provide a positive review with pre-release access to the film. It's possible there are some other perks that are provided as well.

Yea most likely the correct version.

When the dust settles

6.8 IMDB

57% RT

So just like the original then? Good!

Lol at people implying the studio schmoozed their way to great early reactions and saying "well BvS had good reactions and so did Suicide Squad." Not even the same ballpark or the same sport. Guess you guys don't realize or know the combination of Villenueve + Deakins makes for fantastic movies.

Taken from Reddit in regards to early responses

There are differences between press junket screenings and limited press screenings (like BvS, Suicide Squad, earlier Transformers films, etc.).

Limited press screenings specifically bring in people who are going to tend to a favorable response. Whether it's because of bias, or just a desire to have a tweet they will put in a commercial or on a DVD cover.

This was an open press junket. There are some reviewers in there (William Bibianni, Steven Weintraub, etc.) that I would trust to give lukewarm or scathing responses if they felt it was warranted.

Now, that's not a guarantee of universal acclaim, or a 98% on RT, or whatever. It's just less likely to have early buzz, then clock in at a 45%. Especially since the junket was 2 weeks prior to release. That usually shows a good measure of confidence in the film by the studio.

We're not saying that it means the positive reactions are unwarranted. We're saying that the reviews are essentially meaningless. It would get positive pre-release reviews REGARDLESS of whether the film deserves it or not.

I don't care if it does good or bad, that's just my opinion.

I have no problem with Villenueve, actually I went out and saw Arrival in a theater and I thought it was absolutely
