BJJ, Strength & Air Traffic Control

Welcome back. Don't bother checking up on the lack of win in my log.

That was one of the first things I did! Hope you fight in June if you're healed up and ready.

Be ready for lots of noob questions on boxing starting in 2 weeks

How do you like Leangains? I've been thinking about doing a similar approach for teh summer shredz.

Thanks brother. I really need the motivation and the win.

I'm excited for the mma training to start!

As far at the tourney, this is your log so I won't make a huge post about it but it went well. No vids, as my teammates were competing at the same time and my girlfriend didn't go to this one. I got first in the blue belt gi division, as did one of my teammates.

My first match was no gi and I got smoked. I got the takedown, but had my back almost instantly taken, and from there was defending constant submission attempts...rear naked choke, inverted triangle, kimura, armbar, triangle, another armbar and was eventually triangled. He flowed back and forth from submission to submission, I was really in awe.

I hurt my neck in my no-gi match, so I pulled guard in my first match, went to one-legged x-guard, x-guard, then stood up with his leg on my shoulder and did a mean tree top that and planted his head on the mat. Got to half guard in the ensuing scramble and did a darce-like gi choke with his lapel.

Second match my opponent pulled guard, I stood to pass and worked knee slides and some half guard passes, finally was able to pass from half guard but could stabilize position, as he rolled to turtle. I've been doing nothing but attacking the back in practice so this was perfect. I locked my harness grip and captured his arm in the crucifix as he tried to roll, tried to get a crucifix armbar, and he tried to defend that so I switched to a bow and arrow choke to finish.

Third match I got an outside single, and took him down. Stood to pass and was kind of at a stalemate for a while. I came close to passing a few times, but he was very squirrely and kept reguarding and I could never hold position on the pass. He stood up and tried to take me down, I sprawled and he pulled half guard, and I resorted to my old favorite, the Ezekiel.

Nice Shane! Why can't you log for us anymore?!?!? You always have great tournament performances, awesome to see.

Oh and what part of New York? You should train with Marcelo!

I'm a fail at logging. I dunno how I did it before, I'll get a few days behind and then it never seems worth it...maybe the summer will be better. With work, school, lifting and BJJ it just never seems that important at the end of the day.

How do you like this MMA stuff you've been doing? That has always been my dream but there are no good schools in driving distance to me.

Since the beginning of the year I've recovered from a staph infection, suffered a broken hand and torn calf but I have been fortunate to spend the last couple months teaching, training and hanging out with a 4x black belt world champ (he just took gold in his division at pan ams), so when I have been training most of my focus has been on jiu jitsu.

Bruno told me one day, "People gotta be afraid of your jiu jtsu." That is my focus now. While I do want to work on my standup a little more consistently, I'm much closer to making people fear going to the ground with me and I want to get there fast. When strikers are afraid to throw strikes out of fear of being taken down and wrestlers are afraid of taking me down due to my submissions fighting will be a lot easier.

That is a solid game plan. It would be awesome to have a gwaurd like Aoki...people are afraid to GET ON TOP. Lolololol at people running away from the buttscoot.

BJJ (no-gi)

Was working takedown drills on my own before class, and my instructor noticed and started working with me for about 10 minutes on single leg details. Helped a TON. Really need to focus on keeping my torso in good posture and taking a deep penetration step between their legs. Once I get the leg wrapped I feel good generally, and switch off the single to the double after turning the corner.

Did some agility drills and went to technique, running away escape from side control to turtle, then reversal. Felt good right away as most side control escapes come easy for me due to the self-defense focus in my original gym. Drilled quite a bit.

Then did takedown drills for one round; worked singles, doubles, arm drag set ups and ankle picks plus a few guard pulls. Moved at a fast pace.

Rolled one round only, due to time. Went with a tiny but agile guy, was stuck on the bottom after so much frustration from the feet. Being so small he was always lower than me and I found it hard to even get a good set up for a takedown. I reversed mount with feet in the armpits and finished with a toe hold.

Wow man, that's an excellent job! NAGA is a big deal. How much have you been training lately?

Well I'm not sure where I'll be in NY yet but if it's my ideal ATC facility (New York Air Route Traffic Control Center) then it'll be Long Island. Yes I have to train at Marcelo's at some point.

Warm ups and drills, went over a similar running-away side control escape but taught by our other BB, with some added twists and a finishing triangle out of it. Felt alright.

Was on fire when it came to rolling. Got tapped once by a blue belt via foot lock, but got him with a heel hook after that, then went with another blue and got a TIGHT triangle-arm bar, then went with a muscled Marine and got a head and arm, toe hold and tight triangle. Overall felt great.

BJJ (no-gi)

Warmups and more of the running man escape from side control. Felt unfocused and not like myself going in, couldn't really concentrate for some reason. Drilling felt stiff and unnatural. Once we got to rolling however I snapped back into myself and did well. Went with a blue belt wrestler type, had a good back and forth maintaining mount or top half guard the whole time. Eventually got him with a rolling toe hold. Then went with our BB instructor and had a very active round.

Do you have a preference to no-gi over gi? Or has it just been working out that no-gi classes are more accessible lately?

I way prefer no-gi lately, and it just so happens my gym does the first week of the month *all* no-gi. Plus regularly scheduled no-gi classes thru the rest of the month.

How 'bout you?

Ah I see. I like both, but I try to train both equally. The gi classes at my school have better training partners I think, but it's hard to skip no-gi classes when Dean Lister is the instructor ;P

Nice abs.

I've always preferred no gi to gi. My coach however prefers for us to train almost all gi unless we're preparing for fights/competition. I still enjoy no gi more I guess, but because of him I have a stronger desire to train in the gi now.

I don't train at all nowadays though. :(

Who is Dean Lister? :*( I am ignorant

That's surprising about your coach, I thought he was a big-time MMA guy. Though even the old-school Gracies still advocate training in the gi most of the time.

I just feel like I bring some level of athleticism for my weight, so in the gi I often feel caught up and slowed down by grips. Especially from standing, I find it nearly impossible to do much besides grip and pull guard to sweep. Also don't like that I can't heel hook in the gi.
