BJJ, Strength & Air Traffic Control

Nice job at the meet!

Bummer about the bench. I just switched to a very similar program, westside based benching, and 5/3/1 for everything else. I feel confident that it will benefit me though.

Anyways, congrats on the PRs!!!! Are you going to post a video?

That's what I'm hearing. The school is Millennia MMA. Do you know anything about it?

Dono anything about it, but looking at their website it looks real legit. Some very high notch Bjj guys and MMA training too. Here's an old thread on f12 about it.

By the way, congrats on the meet.

Awesome job at the meet dude! The prs with the weight loss taken into account is huge!

I think most professionals would agree with me that the easiest/best way to get higher bench numbers is to gain weight.

/still bitter about you moving so soon

Post is updated with a vid.

WC- Thanks dude. Westside for bench and 5/3/1 for everything else is exactly what I've been doing. It's just frustrating when is good on paper, but doesn't materialize.

TG- I didn't realize you had such a knowledge of the area. That post was really cool, thanks for sharing it! Looks like Millennia is going to be a great place to train.

Ath- Thanks! I'm happy with the numbers mainly because of the weight loss, yea.

Blah! Yeah I missed you at that tourney which sucks but we'll still cross paths I'm sure. Believe me if I had a choice I would so be staying here. :(

You're right modena and thanks. Found this -http://www.jimwendler.com/2011/09/531-and-bodybuilding/

Looks like I'll be all set.

Yep. Getting bigger is a great way to up the bizzench.

Nice work at the meet, brew!

Nice job at the meet. Your squat looks effortless, really great form. Forget about gaining weight though. What are you more concerned with, being competitive in you BJJ weight class or putting up a bigger bench? You're getting stronger under the bar and in BJJ at the same weight. That's not easy to do. If I were you I'd stick to what you're doing .

Thanks guys. Goon, I should have specified. I was dissatisfied with my bench but I'm not going to change everything around for that. What I'd like to do is just put on some lean mass because man, I just felt/looked scrawny as hell today among the other lifters. I don't mind moving up a weight class in BJJ to be honest.
I'm not heartbroken over the bench, just kinda embarrassed.

What kind of man counsels another man to not get more butch? I ask you.

Rest

Went to bed at like 5am, super late sexy night with long-distance Facetime for hours with this chick. Going to Dallas to see mike macrae tonight. No strength training all week to recover from the meet (feeling DOMS everywhere today), and back to BJJ tomorrow for tournament prep.

Will train BJJ Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, off Friday and tournament Saturday.

I hate you.

It's not at all about how much you weigh. It's how strong, quick and conditioned you are. I don't believe any grappler continued training as much as ever but gained weight and watched his game die.

Goon you said it was ONE of the things, didn't you stop training for a while? If so I can't imagine how you could blame weight gain.

I love places like Trader Joes, Chipotle, Target etc. My bourgeois tendencies, though I have lived in bad neighborhoods too...I just have a lot more to lose nowadays.

While I am not one to be much bothered by shitty neighborhoods/standards of living, the convenience of being located near nice grocery stores/convenience stores/eateries shouldn't be underrated. I love cheap rent; I hate having no place to shop or eat at quickly.

Also, good work at the meet.

I agree with Ath, but my reasons for wanting size are purely (or mostly) aesthetics. I feel like a shrimp

BJJ

Went in on 3 hours of sleep and really glad I did. Did warmups and worked cross collar chokes to mount plus an s-bar from mount. Felt okay overrall, maybe a little slow or short-winded. Rolled a warmup round with a blue belt then very good match with another blue belt, no subs either way though.

What a tough day. Totally exhausted

BJJ

Worked some more cross collar stuff from mount briefly then went into rolling. Went with a purple, couple of whites and couple of blues. Got destroyed by a good tall 4-stripe blue belt, held my own with the purple, did so-so with a new big white belt and did fine against all else. My double leg takedowns have been on fire lately getting evvveryone I try them on. I often get my head wrapped but have good posture so upon going down to side control sometimes they hold on fiercely for a guillotine but I'm just patient and get out or take mount. Good stuff!

MMA Fundamentals

First time doing this class at my gym. It's a new program taught by one of our BB's but only a few people are doing it. A teenager and a fellow blue belt tonight. We worked a single leg takedown, then set them up with jabs and level changes and feints. One thing I need to work on is my footwork when moving/striking (duh this is brand new to me), and when I took my shots initially I was going to my knee like a wrestler would. Instructor corrected this by saying I shouldn't let my knee touch the ground, just change levels to get under any strike and go straight forward. Any thoughts on this from the MMA people?

Then we went a couple of light rounds. Went with the BB first and he took it easy on me of course but still controlled me. Then with the blue belt he got a takedown, patiently took side control but I controlled his biceps to stay safe from strike and eventually rolled him to side control. Threw some light punches and hammerfists at his head and ribs, he regained half guard and we ended in there. Phew!

Very exhausting night. First time doing 2 straight hours of training so my work capacity is very weak. It'll come up with time and consistency of course. I did enjoy tonight just felt so spent.

I practice droppin to the front knee to make sure i get a deep enough level change which IMO is the most important part of hitting the takedown. Going live though obviously your coach is right. And in my experience you should never waste time second guessing your coach, if they're a good coach they will always know better than you.

Also Von Flue Choke. You're welcome.
