BJJ, Strength & Air Traffic Control

When I was his weight I was a very good grappler. Putting weight on is one of things that killed my game.

Unless you mean that you got fat and out of shape, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Unless you mean that you went up a weight class, and the competition got harder.

I hate you.

It's not at all about how much you weigh. It's how strong, quick and conditioned you are. I don't believe any grappler continued training as much as ever but gained weight and watched his game die.

Goon you said it was ONE of the things, didn't you stop training for a while? If so I can't imagine how you could blame weight gain.

That.

Sick abs, Jewb! My diet is for shit. I was 70% good about it, but I guess my metabolism was a shit ton slower than I thought, because I only dropped about 2 lbs in a lot of weeks. My weight is stagnant now, and I'm on paleo. Maybe I'll log something soon.

I practice droppin to the front knee to make sure i get a deep enough level change which IMO is the most important part of hitting the takedown. Going live though obviously your coach is right. And in my experience you should never waste time second guessing your coach, if they're a good coach they will always know better than you.

Also Von Flue Choke. You're welcome.

Yeah, I want to just be on autopilot with whatever they say so I don't ever have to think.

Do you take shots in grappling the same way you do in MMA?

Also, yes the von flue I totally forgot about that! Now that I'm winding up in that position pretty much every time I get a takedown, I'll have to start trying that. Thanks for the reminder. Does it work well for you? All I've been doing is digging my chin into their ribs trying to make holding on to the guillotine uncomfortable.

Off-topic: Got selected by the FAA to be an air traffic controller again, in the great state of New York!!! After 3 selection panels it finally happened, my dream job. :) My stay in California will be a short one hopefully!

Congrats on the job! Feels awesome when things come together like that. What part of NY? Upstate? Or NYC area? Also what bf% would you guesstimate your current pic is?

Do I shoot the same in grappling as in mma? Of course not. The distance is different and strikes change things, but they are very similar pastthe setups.

I don't think I've ever gotten a Von flue choke on someone more than once. You get them the one time and they never try to hold onto the guillotine once you've passed again.

BJJ

Worked cross chokes from mount again into the s-mount arm bar. Neck is REALLY starting to feel raw from all these choke drills this week.

Did king of the mat from mount; went with mostly white belts so got a few subs and escapes/sweeps did fine. Then went with a blue belt from the feet who is roughly my equal in all areas: size, strength, skill etc. So we had a very even back and forth match...I lost an overhook triangle because I let him turn me onto my belly and lose my angle. Got taken down with a double but got a guillotine grip into closed guard but he pulled his head out. Not much else to comment on...
Anxiety-breathing has returned but hopefully will be gone by Saturday for the tournament.

Thanks Pancake. I don't know what part of NY yet but hopefully Long Island; I want to work at New York Center.

According to a 3-site caliper test my bodyfat is currently between 10.5-11.5%.

Ok, I didn't know that's why I asked.

I'll try the von flue next time that happens for sure.

BJJ (no-gi)

Rough night dont feel like going into details.

YES!! That's what I like to hear. I mean, I'd rather be in Cali than be here, but I think you will enjoy it here. Long Island right?

Laptop is broken :( theres so much i want to write about. Too annoying to type on ipad/iphone for long periods so i'll just be off the grid til my new pc arrives

Been training BJJ 4x weekly and 5/3/1 hypertrophy template 4x weekly. Going on a one week road trip w/ train crews next week which sucks because no bjj or strength training besides caliesthenics. Ungh. Then moving to SoCal in 3 weeks!

I don't care about your fucking iPhone drama. This is like the only log I follow, so FACKING ERPD8.

Got my new computer today, logging's back on and spreadsheet in sig is updated.

Diet derailed big time but is back on track in a much better way. I'm expecting even better progress than was detailed in the photos and bf% updates earlier.

Strength training is changed a big too; only 3x a week and much much simpler.

Don't tell me that. You're my inspiration to eat healthier
