Snatch and City of God are probably my top two. Snatch has basically infinite rewatch value. I don't think I can ever get tired of it.

Road to Perdition, A History of Violence, and Eastern Promises are all underrated. American Gangster and Gangs of New York are pretty solid as well.

I can't take Training Day seriously with all that shit supposed to be happening in one day. The Departed is a bit overrated imho. Haven't seen the rest.

I never understood the appeal of American gangster. I guess after reading up on the real Frank Lucas made it lose a lot of its luster.

Would pick Sexy Beast, but it's unfortunately not on the poll.

Eastern Promises or Gangs of New York from the list, I would say. Probably Gangs is better, but it also is so much more than "only" a gangster movie as a historical epic, I am gonna choose Eastern Promises for the crystal clear focus on the genre.

Layer Cake is another one missing, not worthy to win, but surely would have qualified for the list.

IMDB labels? Right...

Nevermind. I'll see myself out of the thread, then.

Training Day is iconic, but I really enjoyed City of God and American Gangster. I haven't seen most of the movies listed though so I can't really compare ..

i can't believe the departed is winning. it's good but not great. it's style over substance and kind of a disjointed mess. people think it's better than it is because it's Scorsese and because of a few standout scenes.

Want proof it's overrated? Mark Wahlberg is literally the best thing in it. mark. wahlberg.

Does In Bruges count? Sexy Beast? Both black comedies about gangsters.

If so, they should at least make the list.

Sexy Beast is a great movie

Road To Perdition is slept on. Had better cinematography and score then the other films on this list. Training Day was certainly a solid one though.
Daniel Craig was so great as a sniveling little brat. It’s crazy how he ended up being casted as bond only a few years after this. He really does have great range. Jude Law also put on such a great and memorable performance. They really uglied him up for that role

tbh, I remember when I first saw it I thought it was great. But then on a re-watch I was like 'wow, this is actually kind of shit. What was I thinking?'

As you say, when Marky Mark steals the entire movie with a side cameo something is terribly wrong.
