Just saw it earlier today. My quick thoughts:
It felt like the movie was being written and built by committee, where every other person in the room had something else they wanted to add to the story and they just couldn't say "no" to any of it. As a result, the story is very busy and most of the primary players aren't given enough time to develop and thrive on screen. With the exception of Batman.
Ben Afleck's casting as Batman didn't worry me as much as other folks (the constant adding of extra characters and plot points stood out more as warning flags for me). In fact, I have to say that the best parts of the movie are written for Batman. Likewise, Gal Gadot did a great job as Wonder Woman. Admittedly she was only given around 15 - 20 minutes to be on screen, so there wasn't a lot to mess up.
The first 90 minutes or so, felt extremely random. As a result, the motivations of both the main characters feel thin at best and extremely ludicrous at worst. You're really going to pin the shooting massacre of an African village on Superman? Batman is really that paranoid of Superman (even though this is the closest to a version of "Bat-God" on the big screen)? You're telling me that two of the most intelligent characters in the DC universe aren't smart enough to take 2 minutes of time to actually talk to each other and find out where they stand before coming to blows?
That's not to say that I wasn't entertained by the movie. In fact, I'm surprised that it ended up still being a okay movie aside all of that. I just can't help that if they had pared the movie down in content and length, they could have focused on the core story line much better and the movie would have ended up moving passed being an "okay" movie and it could have been great. A big part of why The Death of Superman and Dark Knight Returns were such watermark stories is because they had decades of lore and backstory leading up to them. Unfortunately this movie does not have that luxury (in fact it's being used as a cornerstone building block for the DCEU). I believe if this confrontation could have been saved for a later movie, it would have been much more effective.
Final verdict: 7/10 - An average popcorn flick, that could have been great if it could have kept focus.
After thoughts:
*The reveal cameos of the other Justice League members were shoe-horned in and ended up being superfluous.
**Henry Cavill must have been real pissed when he finished reading the final version of this movie's script. I know I would have been if I was in his position.
