Leon has “cleaner” striking than GSP, seems more polished and precise.
Leon has seemingly better kicks. But.. I say that while acknowledging GPS’s great head kicks. GSP sort of scaled down and used less tools as he progressed. Earlier in his career, he would headlock KO people, he would Superman punch people, drop people and finish. He was called RUSH.
GSP then went very conservative and used a wresting based approach where we did not see his striking as much.
Leon on the other hand seems to have started showing more of his arsenal of late.
I Don’t know how Leon would fare vs GSP’s wrestling and grappling l
I think Leon's "cleaner" striking is largely due to build. Slimmer strikers often look cleaner, but muscular guys like GSP look like they're forcing more, even with clean technique.
GSP actually addressed why he couldn't finish anymore on the JRE. He said he wasn't training in a way that would cause finishes.
His wrestling outshining his striking and becoming his go-to game plan doesn't mean that his striking suffered though. He still hung on the feet with guys like Alves and Condit. Hell, he dropped the best Alves we saw in the UFC on his ass.
The problem with Leon (as a massive fan) is that he won't pull the trigger unless there's an obvious target.

So I'm just curious about people's opinions on this.
Not looking at title defenses, not looking at "big fights", or star power or any of that.
I'm not talking about "greatest" ever. I'm talking about "best" ever.
Just going off of skillset, and physical attributes (speed, power, reach, endurance, etc), do you think Leon Edwards is the best welterweight of all time?
The dude hasn't lost a fight in 8 years (2016).
In that time, he's beaten a who's who of WW greats. Welterweights that would be or are considered all time greats in their own right: Colby, Usman 2x, Luque, RDA, Gunnar Nelson, Diaz and Cerrone (both LWs I know but they've had success at 170).
Would GSP have been able to beat Usman? I don't think so honestly. Usman's size advantage and wrestling would have neutralized GSP's wrestling and then GSP would have been sniped by jabs and crosses for 5 rounds.
Colby vs GSP is honestly a toss up for me, although I'd favor GSP.
Leon's skillset is elite everywhere. He is one of the top 3 strikers in all of MMA, and his wrestling was good enough to completely shut down Colby and Usman's wrestling - two of the best wrestlers in the history of the division. Not only did he shut down Colby's grappling, he actually took Colby down.
Leon is also one of the biggest WW champs in the division's history and seems to have near infinite stamina.
Anyways, is Leon the best WW of all time? Why or why not? Do you think he's top 3? top 5?
How does prime GSP vs Leon go? I just do not see GSP taking down Leon and holding him there for 5 rounds. I see GSP getting neutralized and sniped in the 4th or the 5th.
How does Leon do against Lawler, Hendricks, Matt Hughes, BJ Penn, Matt Serra?
Lol what a shit thread this is. I lost interest after you said GSP would lose to Usman and get “sniped by jabs and crosses for 5 rounds.” Dude, tell me when Prime GSP got dominated like that?? hahahahah
GSP in his Prime beats ANY 170lb Fighter, from any era, Prime for Prime!! He would pick Usman apart with his Jabs and Low Kicks and would easily 50-45 him. I think Prime Usman is an easier fight for GSP than Colby would be and Colby would be easy Money for GSP.

This is delusional. He lost to fucking Johnny Hendricks. This is the MMA equivalent of "90s rap was better!!!!". Grow up. Move on. Time keeps moving. It's embarassing to be perpetually stuck in the past.

Tell me when GSP fought someone as big as Usman with a 5 round gas tank. Newsflash - he never did.

Prime Hendricks was a beast. But all he had was good wrestling and a Mexican supplement infused right hand combined with average/basic striking technique. And that was enough to turn GSP's face into hamburger meat and end his run. Usman and Leon would have tooled prime Hendricks and made it look easy. Hendricks would have whiffed on his loaded up right hand over and over again, against either of them.

'Humilliate' might have been strong...I do see, at worst, a decisive UD though.
I wouldn't say Leon completely neutralized Usman in their first fight before that last minute...and 35yr old Usman, and the rest of the not-so-young grapplers Leon has faced, were not on prime GSP's level, especially given his overall skillset. None of them had his explosive, middle-of the-cage TDs, while Usman might be the only one who developed a similarly effective jab later on.
No hate on Leon (or his opponents)...I was thrilled at his championship win and subsequent defenses...I just think prime GSP is on a whole other level. I could see Leon being a big enough threat in the standup to force GSP to take him down (and GSP would, repeatedly, IMHO).
You just completely admitted to how bad and un-serious your analysis is dude. GSP, Usman and Colby are the three best MMA wrestlers in the history of the UFCs welterweight division (honorable mention to Jon Fitch). Leon neutralized the grappling of 2 out of the 3 best UFC WW MMA wrestlers but his wrestling is "shit"???? Come thee fuck on. Be serious. You're a Leon hater and incapable of objectively evaluating this.
Hendricks had an extremely basic game - basic wrestling and basic striking but backed up with explosiveness and tons of power. Johnny would have had NOTHING for Usman or Leon. He couldn't grapple fuck them, and with a much shorter reach and extremely basic striking technique, he would be loading up his right hand all night and missing every single time. Exactly HOW does Hendricks beat Usman or Leon? Like what is the method? He would have a punchers chance and that is literally it.
Both are bigger and longer than GSP. Usman has slightly better striking technique than GSP and good enough wrestling to neutralize GSP's wrestling.

Yeah, I'm not referencing the first Leon-Usman fight. That fight was 8 years ago. But we see that current day Leon can and did neutralize Colby and Usman's wrestling.

GSP is probably the best MMA wrestler of all time. Definitely the best at WW. And Usman and Colby are right behind him. GSPs grappling was not miles ahead of Usman and Colby - it was marginally better.

I don't think it's a given that Leon beats GSP, and anyone who disagrees with me is an idiot. I'm not saying that at all. GSP is a GOAT, a complete fighter, with explosiveness and crazy stamina. I just think it's a much more competitive fight than most are giving credit for. I think the grappling prowess that Leon has displayed in recent years, combined with his elite striking and size, would make Leon a very bad matchup for prime GSP. I'd probably have it 55%/45% Leon, so I wouldn't be surprised to see GSP pull it out at all.
First - put some respect on RDA's name. He's an incredible fighter and was elite at 155 and at 170, and had a complete game.
Second - literally, what the fuck are you talking about:
We just inventing our own reality now? 22 of the 28 MMA media groups that scored the fight scored it for Colby. 6 of 28 scored it for RDA. All 3 judges had it for Colby.
