Movies Arachnophobia 1990 movie...

I think of a film like Gremlins too (which, almost assuredly, was an inspiration to Arachnophobia) where it certainly had humor in it but it was largely a horror film. That's a classic and I don't think you see a lot of films like that with the fusing of genres these days.

yeah similar vibe with Tremors too

It's a decent movie. Kind of a time capsule for that time period in movies. It was marketed poorly at the time, which I figured out as a 10-11 year old. They wanted it to be a comedy, but it really wasn't. It was a drama with comic relief and some horror elements. They even tried (and failed) to market it as a "Thrill-omedy." Major League was around the same time, and although it had far more comedy, it was still more of a drama with excessive comic relief. The way dudes act in comedies now, with the stuttering speech and weird ass fast talk dialogue.. It's fkn stupid and looks nothing like life. They look like bitches. I would prefer comedies like 'Major League' make a return.

As a 10 year old, it was a pure horror movie for me.

When I was even younger (5 or so) The Fly trailers scared the ABSOLUTE shit out of me. For some reason, the parts where it showed the Fly's hyper-vision in green and black were the most disturbing. Shit gave me nightmares.

I was thoroughly revolted and freaked out by The Fly as a kid.

Still, I couldn't deny that it was a very good movie- one that I certainly appreciated more as I got older.

Along with The Dead Zone, it's easily my favorite Cronenberg film of the ones I've seen.

I love spiders, I see them as allies where they feast on all the bugs in my place.

Love this movie. Always thought they should do a remake of it.

that was a date night movie for me, got a major blowie about half way through.

Arachnophobia was not a bad movie. Arachnophobia attempted to replicate the success Jaws and Cujo had at the time with the fear of spiders angle, yet somewhere along the way it falls slightly short. Not a bad movie though.

Reactions to this film depend entirely on how they feel about spiders in the first place.

It's a really well made film, headed by Frank Marshall and prime Kathleen Kennedy, so if you are scared of spiders the entire film is going to creep you out which will totally overpower any of the comedic elements.

If you're not scared of spiders, it's still a really enjoyable film.

Spiders are my biggest fear, and I still enjoy that movie. It usually finds its way to my tv at least once during the Halloween season.

I think you could argue this along with Gremlins 2 was really one of the last horror comedies to make a significant impact at the box office, I spose Army of Darkness did ok but generally the genre ended up shifting towards increasing bad direct to video style releases.

Shawn of the Dead did ok, and so did Zombieland etc...

Actually horror-comedies became MORE popular.. I would say you are referring to drama-horror-comedies. (sorry)

Yeah good call.

Army of Darkness is a cult classic. I don't think it had that strong box office appeal in its day like those others did.

I think the New Batch is a great example. And it amped up the comedy/satire element more so than the first one. To me, the first is the better film though. I thought it had the perfect tone for what it was trying to accomplish.

There's a movie with Adam Scott and Toni Collette from a few years back called Krampus that supposedly goes for that same type of vibe. Haven't seen it but I'd wager it's worth a watch for anyone looking for that style of film.

I saw this movie as a child and it ruined me. Now every spider I see is a threat to my life.

Although I think The New Batch stands out as still having a lot of invention to it, Arachnophobia isn't a bad film at all but honestly I do think its starting to become a bit bland relative to what you excpected from the genre previously.

Its easy to look back and say for example that CGI blockbuster, grossout comedy or teen slasher films were a downgrade from what was on offer in the 80's but most of the time the issue was that they replaced genres that were already in decline.

I used to have this attitude but then a close friend of mine was bitten by a recluse hiding in his jacket. Had to get a large chunk of his flesh cut out...... Now if I see them in my house they die.
