Ankalaev = Nondescript / Nothing

Well, the oddsmakers disagree. Ankalaev is a very slight betting favourite.

If you are so certain that this is a mismatch, here's your chance to get rich!

suarez was a slight fav vs zang too last saturday too..

The guys who claim "this fight is a mismatch", "this fighter has no way to win" etc always find a way to bitch out & never put any money where their mouth is lol.

Ank is -115 and Alex is -105. Yesterday Alex was -110 the line keeps changing. But I did place a measly little 80 on Alex.

He prefers to stand but when he needed to, he took Jan down at will. Pereira just went life and death with Rountree in a kickboxing match, now include the threat of the takedown and you might be surprised at how effective Ank's boxing might look.
He took Jan down at will and managed a draw? I don't think you know what certain words mean

If you go look at Ankalaev's UFC stats he only has 10 takedowns through 14 fights spanning 36 rounds. I'm unsure if he even has the cardio to wrestle 5 rounds and additionally he's never subbed anyone professionally.

Luckily for him he is a pretty good striker. He certainly has a chance at knocking Alex out. People hoping for a grapplefuck are likely to be disappointed though.

“At best, Ankalaev = a competent wrestler, who rarelyUSES wrestling.
He's never faced anyone of note in grappling / wrestling ...”

I guess him being a Sambo champion is just random and lucky.

Stylistically Ankalaev probably has a better chance than Jamal Hill or Jiri ever had against Alex wherever it goes.

But yeah, I haven't seen much of Ankalaevs wrestling game to know if it's even good enough

I love how people who have never seen sambo cite sambo as a credential. He did combat sambo not sports sambo. Combat sambo isn't a grappling sport.

I’m very nervous as a poatan fan, ank is a big test who will definitely wrestle if it starts going bad on the feet. And if he wins, we’re going back to one title fight a year probably

I hope he'll try to mix it up like prime Fedor vs CroCop. It's getting a bit boring seeing all these guys play Pereira's game.

Ankalaev is a beast. His wrestling may be overrated, but he better try to use it if he wants to win. Pereira's power is too much for him to think he's got a legit chance to just beat him in a kickboxing match.

Number of takedowns doesn't tell the whole story. Ankalalev didn't land too many vs Jan but he still got a decent amount of control time in rounds 4 & 5. I think something similar will happen vs Pereira, hopefully Ankalaev isn't foolish enough to not mix in the threat of the takedown.

Again I do think Ank's striking is rather underrated on Sherdog, perhaps for the same reason his grappling is overrated a bit? people expect dagistani fighters to be grapplers first strikers second?

I feel like this maybe the danger for him in this fight though, he's good enough that I doubt he is thinking "I don't have a chance standing vs Alexs" but that hope may end up in him playing Alexs game. I mean actually Ank's striking isnt a million miles from Alex's when he stalks opponents(hasnt ever shown he can turn it on as we saw late in the Rowntree fight though) which I think can be a bad situation, fighting a match were the opponent is just better at what your trying to do. Ank does have decent lowkicks and he does have decent power in his hands but Alexs has more of both and generally more history of landing big shots.

Personally I don't think Alex's is a fighter you take down "at will", that to me implies you just need to hustle to the cage and the takedowns are easy but Alex's defence against the cage looked pretty good vs Jiri to me and I get the sense that and standing back up are were he's spent most of his effort on in grappling defence. Mixing up takedowns with striking maybe more of a threat to Alex and may limit his striking more but Ank doesnt really have much of a history of that which I can remember, can't recall many situations were he threw out a shot or got a clich throw during a striking exchange. Same with threatening Alex with subs when he tries to stand back up, I could see it working but I'm not sure I see Ank doing it.
