Yeah, I’m bummed I learned about it. I liked him so much as a good representative of jiu-jitsu that I trying to blame the environment in Rio, the fact that it’s not America, not as progressive, not as wordly, just to give Roger the benefit of the doubt.

It has been stated before, the black belt doesn’t necessarily equate to being an entirely good person. I have been reading this thread as it goes along and I see disappointment in some posts in regards to who they thought was a “good person”. I would like to say that we all should stop thinking that way. Even the ones that are idolized, or you are certain that they are good people, they may not be. You don’t know the choices they make day in and day out. Respect and idolize those that you know, work with, train with. Not some bjj guy because he has a black belt and seems nice in technique videos.

Honestly I've never done things of this kind as a kid/youngster. But I also understand many other young people do/did crazy stuff only to grew out of it all. I think it would be kind of stupid to hold it on them when they did nothing but being publicly good and respectable for the past two decades like Roger did. And this episode is nothing but clear to be honest. Nowhere it says they physically beat them up with bats. Maybe they just want to scare them out.. which togheter with the paintball guns shooting is still reprehensible to be honest (especially if the group did nothing to them, which we don't know anyway), but it's nowhere near worth of marking somebody that age forever.

Besides I'd generally agree on being careful of putting public figures of any kind on a pedestal. Remember, we know this episode happened kind of by chance. Are you sure that if we pick and scrutinize day by day of the life of people considered nice like Marcelo, Bernardo or tens of others we would only find rainbows and sunshines? I don't know man.. I certainly hope so, but I don't know..

I haven't heard anyone say that in a while. In the gi? Probably. No gi? The game has moved on.

Teleport 2003 Marcelo to here, give him about a year to catch up on things and JUICE HIS FUCKING FACE OFF and we might be having a different conversation. But at this point I don't think anyone is living under the illusion that Marcelo is better than Gordon. (Rickson, on the other hand /s)

sure, there is that. i'm 35 now and when i see 18 year olds, they're kids, and i expect them to act accordingly.

but i know i never went hunting for a marginalized group and assaulted them, at any age. i know if any of my friends did that at 18, i'd be fucking mortified. you're not completely clueless at that age, you should be held responsible for the stunts you pull at that point.

teenagers do stupid shit, but it's mostly damaging property, getting drunk and possibly brawling, getting pregnancy scares and the like. there's quite a categorical difference between that and sitting around one night going "you know what guys, we should go find some immigrants and fuck them up". you know what i'm saying?

it doesn't mean the man grew up to be a sociopath, it's quite possible the story is blown out of proportion, or he had one night of really bad decisions and grew out of it and turned out to be a great guy. but on the surface the story sounds pretty fucking bad and this brushing off, that kids simply do that stuff, is just ridiculous. they really don't.
