GSP got thrown in the deep end, he fought for the title in his 3rd UFC fight, having been in the UFC for less than a year.

He got caught vs Serra. A mistake he never allowed to happen again. Props to Serra for landing a good clean shot and following up like a honeybadger to finish the job.

GSP won 12 consecutive title fights after the Serra fight (beating Koscheck in between)

If Usman rattles off 7 more title fight victories he will be Goat. And he probably won't have to beat 2 top 3 guys to get a rematch like George's did.

You mention Usmans "first loss in 7 title fights"

So he is 6-1 in title fights.

GSP is 12-2

Same ratio. So all Usman has to do is just maintain that same ratio over 7 more title fights. (And pick up a MW title)
Easy peasy, right?
He's halfway there, which may have something to do with that 170 Goat conversation.

GSP's considered the WW Goat over Marty because of what he did AFTER that Serra loss, not to mention the loss happened when GSP was 26 years old, he hit his prime after that when he moved to Jackson's and changed his style to be more safe.

That loss to Leon happened in Marty's prime at 35 year's old, can he bounce back and rack up 5 title defenses? I seriously doubt it.

I agree with most of what you said. 35 years is starting to get up there for a fighter though, so I hesitate to agree that Usman lost to Edwards in his prime. But yes, GSP overall racked up a better career than Usman I think.

Usman hasn't scratch GSP's legacy yet. He was potentially knocking on Hughe's 2nd place door.

One of the biggest knocks against Usman is his 5 defenses are against 3 guys. As soon as he got out that Colby/Masdival circle he lost

Anyway GSP has 9 title defenses. Over like 8 different guys. No one should be talking about GSP until a guy gets 7 defenses.

Not a big GSP fan but that whole finishing sequence began with a huge accidental shot to the back of the head after which GSP was fighting drunk. Then he avenged it. Leon's was a clean KO.

To me GSP looks less bad here because it was more flukish but whatever

Honestly I don't think Usman has caught Matt yet. I think people just forget Matt's era.

Matt is a 2x champ he won 9 title fights, and held the belt for the better part of 5 years 2001-2006. (and 2 non title fights as champ, the Riggs fight was basically another title defense)

Matt was 41-4 when GSP ended his reign.

Usman, imo, is nowhere near the amount of work and the amount of TIME that Matt was able to sustain his position atop the division and the sport.

If Usman wins the belt back, MAYBE then you can make an argument that MMA evolved and that he can get a pass for having less overall title wins... and I'm still not sure.

Depends. If we include PED's I have him as the GOAT already due to his run in LHW and beating all the LHW legends and champions back to back, and having 13 title defenses. Apart from the Matt Hammill loss, he is virtually undefeated (I know he had 2 fights that could have gone either way). A loss to a HW shouldn't impact his GOAT status much, he's getting old and is fighting at a weight class he never fought in before after a long layoff

As for natural GOATS its probably GSP or Fedor

I dont hate him but he is a proven ped cheater. "They all take steroids" doesnt wash. Its astounding that someone like jones would be ostracized and considered a fraud in any other sport apart from mma.Thats my issue.

TBH, JJ already proved himself...did GSP need to beat Bisping at MW to be a goat? No......like is there one fight that makes you a goat? or is it many fights? So far...I think...cause Goat talk is just what you think...JJ was the best LHW I ever saw...GSP...the best WW I ever saw...155...I go with Khabib I ever saw...HW....dam thats a hard one...Cain or Fedor or DC or Stipe...IDK between them...I go with Fedor and Cain...
