Not really, not considering a fighter GOAT due to bad loses, poor fight choices or hanging about too long isn't looking down on that fighter.

I respect BJ Penn for example and recognize he did a lot in his career, but am also aware that the latter part of his MMA record losing 6 fights on the bounce cannot just be written off like 'ow well 11 years ago he beat Sherk...GOAT!!' these loses, these beating the fighters take don't mean we look down on them be they certinaly mean something in the whole picture of their career.

Choosing to think a fighter is the best ever in spite of his late career rather than choosing to believe he is not inspite of his glory days is essentially the same thing-Your not wrong, I'm not wrong, it's just a matter of how we see it.

I'd agree, except for failing PED tests.

They all use PED's at the UFC level. But anyone getting caught is using more than the ones not getting caught. Basically there are only three reasons anyone ever tests positive:

1) Can't afford decent drugs. Definitely doesn't apply to Jones.
2) Is too stupid to follow simple procedures. Even more definitely doesn't apply to Jones, he's smarter than your average MMA fighter.
3) Is using more than the suggested test beating dosage to get an advantage over those who use the test safe dosage.

It has to be (3). Why he feels a need to use more than other fighters is hard to say, but he clearly is using more than guys who aren't testing positive.

Okay I can see that. I mean out of prime it is very harsh but for me when it's so close between, for me GSP and Fedor, you have to be a little harsher.

It's also a matter of not wanting to see these guys not walk away at the right time. It hard to watch some of these guys go out on bad bad beatings in fights they should never be in.

But you know I'll concede a little on this one and say you're right it is not 100% fair.

But total skillset wise GSP went on a streak of 9/11 of his fights were decisions. We didn't see much of his guard. He had a jab but no combos. The rare time we saw his guard it wasn't offensive. His gameplan was strategy not skill.

and theres a reason so many legends fight "too long". They are obsessed with competing. They aren't doing it to get paid. GSPs career is marred by playing it safe in so many ways.

I've never seen a fighters stock drop so fast. After the years of arguing back and forth with Silva fans, it was surprising and a little sad to see so many of them vanish.

You have a very pessimistic view of George's achievements. As much as he was injured back between his Shields and Condit fight, that's something he couldn't of controlled. He came back from an ACL tear and unified his belt. You can twist it any way you want, but George won his first UFC belt back in 2006, and 12 years later, beat Michael Bisping for the MW belt. Who has had 12 years between their first and last UFC title win? The closest one is Silva, but Silva is 1-5-0 1 NC since 2012. Jones would need to still be winning in 2023 to achieve this.
It's crazy how after all these years, Matt Serra is still being mentioned. George demolished him in the rematch and Serra never got close to a title shot again. This proves it was a "fluke".

A lot of BJ fans, as his career slipped began cheering on other fighters based not on who they liked but rather based on who they hated. They hated GSP and they hated Edgar and so Anderson and Benson and then Aldo inherited lots of angry BJ fans.

YOu saw it when Benson and Aldo beat Edgar in decisions that Edgar was disappointed in and we got all sorts of 'good, now he knows what it feels like...' type posts. They were not celebrating Benson or Aldo's win as much as Edgars loss. Anderson was their hope to beat GSP.after being disappointed in each and every WW win GSP racked up. You would hear them saying 'GSP needs to move and test himself like BJ did' ' prove himself a warrior like BJ did'. And they would use that to try and diminish GSP.

BJ definitely had some very passionate fans, but they also were very much sad bitter cases. And I say that as someone who loved BJ but hated most of his fans.

Well... depends on who you ask... nevertheless, a lot of us think an achievement at HW trumps an achievement at WW. One division is basically open to all comers. The other is a shelter from other, larger men who would be far more likely to beat you.
