Man, I was not expecting this movie to be as fucked up as it was.

When
the alien egg tore open the woman's vagina and was pushed out in a shower of blood, I did not know what to do with myself. I've seen crazier things in movies, but I wasn't expecting that from this franchise. I sat there with popcorn halfway to my mouth for probably a full minute. I think it was because of the pg-rated, non-horrific way the franchise aborted the alien from Noomi Rapace that I just didn't think this franchise of attacking genitalia had the cojones to do body horror on that level.

And then
when the baby grew up into that bizarre lanky creature and was sucking blood and organs out of its mom, then lumbered around and stalked the heroine (who was walking around in bare feet, which really unnerved me for some reason -- all that acid, I guess) I was having an emotional reaction to the movie that I absolutely did not expect to have.

Having said that, top fucking notch. It was a great movie and I'm so glad to see Aliens and Predator returning to their roots. I guess the executives have decided to postpone their meddling bullshit until the franchises are profitable again. I hope the Terminator executives learn the same lesson because that franchise has really suffered from throwing-popular-shit-at-the-wall-and-seeing-what-sticks-then-wondering-why-nothing-sticks-for-what-used-to-be-a-horror-movie.
that was definitely the most gruesome bit of violence in the movie & really outshone all of the other kills. i was expecting kills more on that level the entire time, from being familiar w/ the filmmaker, but it did make it more effective/shocking when it happened. it was also a character i ended up having the most sympathy for outside of the leads

Yeah, the characters actually had things for an audience to connect to and the reveal of the father was handled with rare skill and nuance. that might have been my favourite character moment in the film.

When it started, it looked like one of those movies based on a Young Adult novel and I was skeptical about the next 2 hours, but it really didn't fall into the pitfalls of franchises rebooting with young people.

i'm concerned that this is going to go the way of Michael Myers Halloween, where they go back to its roots in a safe reboot, people get excited that the studio managed to churn out a decent addition to a dead franchise. Then they start pumping out sequels of consistently deteriorating quality until the franchise is dead again

good luck to Alien. I dont like the trend of going back to the well to deliver 1 good movie and sink it again over the next 2-3 movies, repeat in 10 years

i dont think poor Terminator's ever got a successful reboot done

Prometheus and Covenant create an odd attraction as a movie goer. They're well made (as per usual with Ridley Scott) with very interesting ideas and some truly chilling scenes, but neither of them seem to flow very well. Not really re-watchable as a whole. I like to rewatch certain scenes though. I imagine they'll grow in popularity as time goes on.
Perfect description of Prometheus. Every time I rewatch it I have to fast forward all the way to them going to the ship the first time.

I just watched this. I thought this was absolutely fantastic. What a great movie.
There have been so few movies to come out in recent years that I thought were good, let alone great. But this one is definitely great. Great dialogue and plot. The different parts of the movie transitioned naturally to the next part without anything seeming contrived. Great visual effects. I really liked it.

Watched it a few days ago. One of the better "traditional" Alien flicks. Was a good approach with having a rag tag bunch of folks breaking into a Wayland facility, rather than the usual "space crew" running into issues. I liked that they let the facehuggers have their moment in the sun, rather than being relegated to the old "Durr, I'm gonna look directly into this egg" shit. Nice watching them in action for a change. Characters were fine. Atmosphere was on point. Action was good.

I don't think it was anything particularly special, but it was certainly better than the whatever the fuck Ridley Scott was doing with the Prometheus sequel. It didn't try to be anything it wasn't. Tight little horror/action romp with some nice throwbacks.

7/10
