idk if i’d say Andy was backstabbing the other in the group as he was pretty transparent w/ his decisions & having a new directive. i agree that android characters in the Alien franchise have basically become plot devices to drive the action forward/make decisions for characters, but at least Andy had depth & conflict as a character. he was the best part of the movie imo

Yea Andy wasn't straight up backstabbing like the other AI characters but it was too similar to me. I agree that he was a great character which is why I didn't like that they did that to him. I would have preferred that he helped them counter the other AI the whole movie the best he could but is an older model so not as good as the main AI. Him and the girl (Andy?) were my favorite characters as well. I'm also glad they let him live. It seemed they were setting him up to sacrifice himself for Andy but they didn't go that direction.

Andy was the synthetic human guy & the girl’s name was Rain (literally just watched it last night but still had to look up her character name just now lol)

Just finished watching, and I throughly enjoyed it.

Aliens is my #1 favorite movie of all time, and I consider Alien to be the the greatest SciFi/Horror movie of all time.

Since then, the Alien franchise has come no where close to the greatness of the first two entries... possibly with the exception of Prometheus (which I also throughly enjoyed).
I mention Prometheus to illustrate that my standards for a 9th entry of one of my favorite franchises isn't absurdly high.

Prometheus isn't perfect by any stretch but it definitely got more right than wrong, which is also what I'd say about Romulus.

The directing is 10/10. Now I completely understand those I've heard online say Fede Alvarez should direct a Dead Space series, because there's no question much of this movie was inspired by Alien Isolation.

The sets, costumes, cinematography, music... all 10/10.
The acting is... pretty damn good for a SciFi/Horror movie.
Nothing distractingly bad but no one is getting nominated either.

The only complaints I have are the cut&paste fan service from other Aliens, which are distractingly horrible.
Remember the colonial marines pulse rifle?
Remember 'get away from her you bitch?'
Remember 'I prefer artificial person myself.'
Remember the black goo?
Remember 'you have my sympathies?'
Can't recall examples of fan service combined feeling so condescending.

I actually enjoyed Ash making a return to the series... and I wish I didn't remind myself he was flamethrowered at the end of Alien, and his remnants were blown up with the rest of the Nostromo.

If they had edited out those big issues I would say this is a 9.5/10 movie... but unfortunately they didn't edit them out, and was repeatedly taken out of the movie, so I'm giving this an 8/10.

But when you take into account all the numerous horrible Alien films over the years, I'm ranking this as the 4th best.

1. Aliens
2. Alien
3. Prometheus
4. Romulus

Thought it was just decent. Like everyone else said the atmosphere was fantastic and that's where it ends for me. I was really hoping the movie would move the whole story line forward a lot more

I would like the franchise to move on from Ripley clones.

Ripley clone lol!

I guess they are trying to make money without stirring the creativity pot. Better luck next time I suppose. Maybe we will see another movie in 5 to 6 years

It depends what is the lowest budget on which a good Alien movie can be made. Godzilla Minus One cost 10 mil.

I admit I did not read much about this movie before watching it last night. Just figured it was a reboot of sorts would maybe loosely at best tie into the rest of the series. Well I am glad I didn't read anything because finding out that this movie was basically a direct sequel to Alien while watching it was pretty incredible. A few cheesy fan service moments aside and this is one of the best sequels Ive ever watched. The only thing that could have made this movie better was to somehow set up the end to tie into Aliens. 9/10 from me.

Underrated moment when Rook tells them there was only one survivor from the first mission, causally throwing out that Ripley is alive even though she wouldn't be found for another 20 years after this movie.

I have to say, Alien: Romulus is very much like Prey was to the Predator franchise. A nice little course correction and a welcome relief to know there's still hope for the franchise.

Flawed, yes, but a step in the right direction. I am a huge Alien and Predator fan, and went into this movie trying to know as little about it as possible. I knew about it having primarily a young cast, and being slotted in the timeline after Alien. That was about it. I avoided watching the press releases and news drops, and only watched the trailer once. I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, just wanted a solid entry on the road back to horror.

Despite the flaws that it does have, they are not so bad that it made me not like the movie. Alvarez did a good job of capturing the feel of Alien and Aliens, expanding on the foundation they tried to establish with Prometheus and Covenant while trying to make his own mark on the franchise.

1. Alien
2. Aliens
3.

4. Prometheus
5. Alien 3 - Assembly Cut
6. Covenant
7. Resurrection

Alvarez, almost certainly, will be back for the next installment too. And I just happened to come across this article trying to find out for sure.

Finally got to watch this and there's so much I appreciated about it as a huge Alien series fan. Incredible production design and direction. Nice, long shots, with the frame filled with details (much like the first Alien). Characters were generic, yet somehow you cared for them because the actors were good. Andy was the exception, he was GREAT. I also appreciate the fan service to a point. "Get away from her......... you bitch." was a bit too much for me. I loved seeing the Ian Holmes droid, until he spoke. The CGI was brutally awful there. But I really loved how they reused a lot of sound effects and that the computer screens on the ship had the same archaic software as the original films.

Overall, 8/10. Love that they managed to make the Alien scary again.

Bland characters. Navarro stood out the most and she is like DTV / okay Nflix level in charisma and the android. Covenant had a lead one step above what we had here.

Prometheus and Covenant create an odd attraction as a movie goer. They're well made (as per usual with Ridley Scott) with very interesting ideas and some truly chilling scenes, but neither of them seem to flow very well. Not really re-watchable as a whole. I like to rewatch certain scenes though. I imagine they'll grow in popularity as time goes on.

I agree on the bland characters in Romulus, but at least they were good bland characters. Could've been worse. The actor who played Andy was the standout. At first, I thought "Man, they found the perfect guy to play a meek and timid android." Then, after Rook's chip was installed in him, he made an immediate switch in voice and body posture that was very impressive.

Prometheus is one of the few movies i rewatched.

For all the shit talking people have done on Prometheus(some of it is well deserved) its still a movie a decade+ later that people are making numerous videos on Youtube breaking down the film talking about the lore behind it...etc.

Anyway finally watched Romulus.

Pros: A lot of the cinematography looked good. Overall slick looking(though I think it looked still a bit too slick and modern impacting the practicals for scare effect. Set designs were mostly good.
Lead girl was decent. Not annoying but nothing too memorable. Andy was the only standout as others reported.

Cons: Not much memorable about this. Just story wise this might be the least interesting Alien movie to date. It's a mix mash plot with constant member berries nonstop.
Overall casting felt like way too young like they could have easily been casted heading to Camp Crystal lake to get drunk, have sex and get murdered but here we have them in technical space situation. Also the Liam Gallagher knock off was annoying and did annoying stupid things.
I wasn't into the Alien creatures design as most it seems. Some of the shots worked but a lot didn't..... they started the movie off with a swarm of CGI facehuggers which all of the combined was not as effective as the crude 1979 version with just 1 attacking someone that was all practical. Alien lifecycle was terrible and little suspense. It's like they already knew that the audience knows the lifecycle so they just sped time up which made it all the worst.

TLDR; I thought it was ok. Call back movie that never became its own thing. Too fast of a haunted house ride that’s Alien-themed with member berries at every turn. This movie is a product of how big studios mostly handle successful IPs today with little risk and stick to the formula since it's the safest bet. That can work critically but you gotta tighten up on core things if you are going to repeat. They made good money so from their end it worked.

I would like the franchise to move on from Ripley clones.

They have. Now we have Rey and Finn tag team clone (Rain and Andy)

I dunno man there have been so many bad alien movies in a row now. I'll probably watch it eventually but my trust has been damaged.

Man, I was not expecting this movie to be as fucked up as it was.

When
the alien egg tore open the woman's vagina and was pushed out in a shower of blood, I did not know what to do with myself. I've seen crazier things in movies, but I wasn't expecting that from this franchise. I sat there with popcorn halfway to my mouth for probably a full minute. I think it was because of the pg-rated, non-horrific way the franchise aborted the alien from Noomi Rapace that I just didn't think this franchise of attacking genitalia had the cojones to do body horror on that level.

And then
when the baby grew up into that bizarre lanky creature and was sucking blood and organs out of its mom, then lumbered around and stalked the heroine (who was walking around in bare feet, which really unnerved me for some reason -- all that acid, I guess) I was having an emotional reaction to the movie that I absolutely did not expect to have.

Having said that, top fucking notch. It was a great movie and I'm so glad to see Aliens and Predator returning to their roots. I guess the executives have decided to postpone their meddling bullshit until the franchises are profitable again. I hope the Terminator executives learn the same lesson because that franchise has really suffered from throwing-popular-shit-at-the-wall-and-seeing-what-sticks-then-wondering-why-nothing-sticks-for-what-used-to-be-a-horror-movie.
