Usually it had been him that threw me. Now, instead of being thrown, I was throwing him with increasing regularity. Yes, that was a cool post. But if Ueshiba was so crazy to begin with, how did he get some high level people to follow him? Wasn't Abbe a really good judoka? Abbe beat Kimura in competition.

how did hitler do to make 80 million people, some among the most inteligent people in the world, follow him to the destruction of his country? and almost the planet? how did he do to make normal people treat human beings as equals to rats and animals without the least feeling of remorse? People is crazy man, what can I say.

He did indeed have some pretty skilled students from other arts. I'm not sure why they chose to train with him, but I'm sure they had their reasons. My guess is that they felt he had something to offer them that they couldn't get in their other training.

It is worth noting that a good amount of his early students ended up distancing themselves and making their own splinter arts separate from Ueshiba's main Aikido school.

It's saddening that you can't even call a Grand Master whose lineage consists of vague references to ninjas full of shit anymore without someone frowning at you.

All I said is that I'm not aware of any formal rule, the people I know that knew Ueshiba never mentioned it, and there are counter-examples (so there was definitely no rule during some of the time). If you've got an actual primary source to indicate otherwise, of course, that would be conclusive.

"In its early, pre-World War II years, access to Aikido instruction was very exclusive, limited to individuals with proper, personal high-level introductions to Morihei Ueshiba. It was not until the 1950’s, under the leadership of Kisshomaru Ueshiba, the founder’s son and inheritor of the leadership of Aikido, that Aikido was widely taught in Japan."
