Advice buying a new SUV

My wife has an SUV and I've never seen any problem getting kids in a car seat. I can see where the slider would be easier in a parking lot where space may be limited to open the door. Of course, nothing seems impractical for me. When my oldest was born, I was still driving a Jeep Wrangler. Talk about a pain in the fooking arse. You had to climb in the back seat to get the kids buckled up.

My buddy had a CVR with a 3rd row fold up seat which he had to use for a kid sometimes -talk about a pain in the ass.

If you want a car that you'll spend more time taking to the repair shop than actually driving, then I recommend an a VW or Audi (they're the same company if you don't know).

TS is looking to do some dick swinging so he'll be more than happy swinging his dick at the auto shop twice a week. YOLO!!

I don't care about chick car versus manly car BS. I just am talking basic functionality. You must not have tried both to see the differences -It's significantly easier because of the low floor and high ceiling -plus sliding door.

I still own one to haul boats and kayaks -but don't drive it regularly.

The sliding door on a minivan is infinitely more practical for getting kids in baby seats as opposed to a hinged door. Agree with Seven on this one.

Maybe you guys are right, but I have not had much problem with the q5 thus far.

It's like wearing a nice suit, it looks good, even if it's not as comfortable as wearing sweats.

I've owned a Passat cc for the last 4 years. It's never been in except for regular maintenance. Wonderful car.

And yes I know that the VW group sells many cars under various brands.

I have a 2.5 year old child. Wife drives a 2004 CRV great car. Not a ton of pickup
but not terrible. My brother in law is a mechanic and he said if we bought a CRV he would harldy ever see it in the shop.

I got a FJ Cruiser a few months ago and am happy with it. Its really not that bad getting the child into the back. Overall the truck is great.

Subaru Forester is also a great option like someone suggested.

Overpriced, I get. I've just never associated luxury with VW. When I do think of the two words together, I think Phaeton and its W-12.

From the list that you linked, I'd go with the Infiniti FX long before any if the others, if you're into the whole luxury branding thing. I haven't driven the FX but the last two rental Infinitis I was in were nicer than their competition. Esp the German makes.

Absolutely it's overpriced, just like most brand name products in the world.

Have you driven the new Touaregs? I've driven quite a few "luxury" sedans and SUVs and this is right up there imo. Obviously not a lot of VW fans here though...

Not really.

No. I'm not really interested in this class of vehicle because I see them as largely pointless with a lot of characteristics I specifically do not like nor want in a vehicle. Last VW I drove, liked and seriously thought about buying was the Scirocco R-Line. Then it occurred to me that I was about to pay roughly $50k USD for a 3 door VW hatchback, came to my senses and went with another option instead.

A common theme among VW owners back in the states is how awful VW customer service is. What that price premium isn't buying you that it is with the other marquees is decent service.

I believe 7Sams owns a VW, but IIRC, he also does most of his own work.

What luxury/premium sedans and SUVs have you driven?

I have driven both the New Durango and Explorer recently. Very nice cars. Size of a mini van, but still have some All weather ability, and they look pretty cool. I was honestly surprised, how luxurious both of them were. They were both in the high 30k's, but drove, and were appointed like high end luxury cars.

You know that the Q5 and the RX350 are chick cars, and the VW and the Audi are maintenance nightmares, right?

Seriously, go with a minivan. They're infinitely more practical vehicles for a family than these non-SUV CUVs.

Myth Audi and Vw have been really reliable in the past years

Negative. Audi and VW have improved, but they're at or below average on most lists, with VW often occupying one of the last few spots.

In no way could you characterize either as "really reliable."

It all depends on what you want. Do you want all wheel drive? If you don't, crossover SUVs don't offer you anything besides sitting up higher. Planning on lots of kids? Than a minivan offers a lot. Want to tow something? Than a Touareg would be much better than the smaller crossovers.

If you want an suv, I like the Grand Cherokee because it is very comfortable and does everything well.

As far as Volkswagen reliability, all the consumer reports say it is below average. However, I have a Golf TDI that I have put on almost 30k miles on in about 18 months and I haven't had a single issue. Just routine maintenance and I couldn't be happier with it. Obviously luck plays a factor.

This, plus the SRT-8 jeeps are fucking awesome
