A wolf versus a dog (discuss please)

like some have said, it all depends on the gameness of dogs. Size isn't really the issue, which is why most are of the opinion that pits are better fighting dogs than larger ovcharkas, kangals, dogo's etc. In a fantasy match up of gameness being equal, a wolf would probably eat any dog. but with a pack and survival mentality, it's hard to say.

The wolf will intimidate the dog and exude Alpha confidence, kinda like how Conor mentally beats his opponents before he beat them in their fight.

Skill levels being equal, I'd always give the advantage to the wolf.

They're wild animals built to kill. They haven't been domesticated for 200 years and occasionally trained to fight. It's in their DNA.

Dog wins by cuteness. Puppy power

I have a hard time imagining the skill level being equal very often. Wolves are elite predators who live in a kill-or-be-killed world, and must fend for themselves. Dogs are just pets, albeit oftentimes intelligent and hardworking. In most cases, it would be like a decent street fighter taking on a Navy SEAL, of comparable weight.

Wolves, remember, live or die on remaining healthy. A broken leg is death. Dogs have been bred to lay down their lives of need be. They are individually potentially much more dangerous.

Wolves hunt in packs and rely on their cardio, chasing prey till its exhausted. They do not fight to the death on a regular basis, if ever.

Wolves can get pretty big too.

Also a dogs motivation to fight tends to be not so much about getting something to eat but more that they're protectors. Dogs don't tend to fight unless someone threatens their owner. At least that's the only time a well trained dog will initiate the fight.

There's something to be said for learned experience too.

Wolves spend all their lives hunting, and killing, and they learn how to do it quickly, and efficiently. And the pack structure means they fight internally a lot as well - so they are pretty experienced with fighting canine like animals.

Dogs don't spend their lives hunting and killing and would be relatively inexperienced in fighting another canines.

The only advantage a dog might have is it's health and that it's well fed. Wild wolves probably come with existing injuries and wounds, and are most likely suffer from malnutrition.

------------

There is certainly something to be said for combat experience.

There was an article I read above Lions vs. Tigers. The evidence shows (whenever there has been a fight) is that Lions will generally beat Tigers.

The reason is that tigers don't fight other tigers very often, and when faced with a lion, will go for the throat. Except male lions have huge great Manes protecting them - so the tigers' attack is softened.

Lions, when they fight each other, will often attack the thighs - looking to sever an artery

So the Tiger will ineffectually attack the lions throat, but quickly bleed to death from wounds.

i think when certain breeds were bred to hunt other animals such as basenjis, rhodesian ridgebacks, wolfhounds, deerhounds, great danes, and others, i don't think it was ever a one on one fight.
packs of basenjis and ridgebacks for example, would track lions, but not take a lion on in a confrontation, could be wrong though?
