A wolf versus a dog (discuss please)

^This is correct. ONLY dog breeds that were bred to combat larger animals can do this, which rules out MOST dogs. But ones that were bred to hunt/combat wolves and/or bears would have a pretty fair chance one on one. However, that wolves almost never fight alone in nature is the big concern.

There are dog breeds that would probably annihilate most, if not all wolves.

Some dog breeds are wolves selectively bred to kick ass. Irish wolfhounds, for example, were bred to hunt wolves and they are fucking enormous.

A caucasian ovcharka would destroy a wolf, I'm guessing.

I've seen dogo Argentinos hold their own against mountain lions.

Irish Wolfhounds are rumored to be the reason there are no wolves on Ireland. They were not only bred for hunting, they were taken to war and considered as equal to lions on the battlefield. Irish Wolfhounds were legit war beasts that were capable of taking out multiple, armed warriors during battle.

Sadly (or maybe for the better, considering how many bad dog owners there are), the original breed is extinct and the common breed was brought about by breeding various breeds to resemble the old, warrior breed.

So who knows if the breed would actually beat an alpha wolf of the larger variety in a fight? It's hard to say.

On Average I'd say the wolf has the upper hand against a domesticated dog since it's larger (on average of course) and has a much harder bite, but I'm sure there are breeds that are capable of beating a wolf in single combat.

12 untrained Strongmen destroys them both and grills them on a bbq.

White Fang couldn't handle the game pit...

1 on 1?
there is no known canine breed that can defeat a wild wolf.

Plenty of breeds wreck wolves on the daily. Ovcharkas, Bully Kuttas, Tibetan Mastiffs, and most of the larger sheepdogs can all fend off wolves.

due to their size and ferocity, a wolf can defeat every dog breed known.

dogs bred to scare off wolves always operate as a pack, in concert with each other.
1 on 1 though, no contest.

A few breeds, like a Dogo or game bred Pit could take a wolf. Even though wolves are strong with a large bite force, dog fights are about gameness and tenacity. Even wolves and bears will tuck tale and run if they feel like they're taking too much damage. It's instinctual for them. Dogs bred for combat or hunting that have true "gameness" will never give up, even with major lacerations, broken bones, or an eyeball ripped out. Dog fights are fights of attrition and the most tenacious dog wins. If you watch wolves fight with each other, one will almost always give up and submit before things get too bloody.

There are numerous documented fights between Pits and wolves out west in the 1800's, with the Pits winning, much like the movie above. There are a couple of books written by dog fighters that discuss this, I'm trying to recall the names of the books.

To be fair, dogs bred for guarding livestock don't go out and "wreck wolves on the daily", their presence is enough to dissuade predators, such as wolves. Predator animals don't usually fight with other predators because an injury could mean their death. It's the same reason lions don't mess with honey badgers and grizzlies don't mess with mountain lions. It takes a very desperate predator to attack another predator.

There are many dog breeds out there that would rip a wolf to shreds. Staffy, Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo, Rotty, maybe even a Mastiff, among others.

With almost no effort. One on one, a Caucasian Shepherd could mince most North American wolves. But as mentioned, wolves are not solitary animals.

Well, I don't think anyone is wondering if any single dog can take on a pack of wolves.

I don't think any domesticated dog would beat a wolf. That is unnless the owner of that domesticated dog takes the dog out to train and hunt it's own food and simulate the prey vs. predator lifestyle, but even then I think I'd favor the wolf.
