Notes

I didn't have a plan for today and I was a little all over the place while I was at the gym. I had wanted to get some cleans in and some light squat work. But when I started the hang cleans I figured why not do push press too.

So for every clean there was a press. The presses were the easiest I have every done even thought the 150 is the heavist I have ever even tried. (I am starting to get push press much better) The failed rep on 150 was due to form on the clean. . I let the bar get out in front of me and didn't try the catch. The second was tight and quick and easy

All cleans were done iin the time it took me to change the weight take a breath and grab the bar again. The 145 failed rep was also a terrible aborted pull.

since I had two terrible pulls, I left that weight on the bar and did some high pulls trying to keep the bar tight to me. Then I did some reps more as a range of motion thing more than anything.

I didn't go to the gym with any intent to do deads today. But there was a bar sitting there laughing at me and I couldn't let the idea of that go unpunished. My intent was to simply ramp up singles to get an idea for a warm up for a one rep attempt in the future. Instead I just kept adding weight even after I hit my old one rep. I should of stopped at 315 and called it good. That rep was quick and tight and felt easy. But I had to push it and go to 345 which I have never acutally done.

I think my mental set up on it was off, as my primary concern was simply not getting stapled to the ground with the bar. It broke clean and easy but stopped below the knee. I felt my weight switch to my toes and my shoulder break forward and couldn't put the weight back on my heels. I had let the bar come away from my body. Same thing on the next attempt but about 1 or 2" less in height. I'm not unhappy about it and it gives me an idea of what I need to do. Form will need an adjustment or two in the coming months.

Looks like this month will be heavy singles and doubles, with assistance alternating between some heavy below the knee rack pulls and more deficit. I'm looking at it this way. If I do the full motion every time, and do the bottom half one time then the top half the other things may level out at some point. I still may do some volume SLDL/shrugs but that will depend on how I feel each day.

The squats went well, with just a tinge of pain in the middle of the second 185 second. The dips were just for cosmetic appeal. Got a good stretch and was going to call it good. But figured hyper extensions couldn't hurt the DL so I did them on my way out since I had time today.

I like the push press/hang clean combo. I think I may keep doing it that way instead of PP/SOHP off the rack. last Hang Clean of record was 135 that I could find.

these are a little more extreme b/c they're bent presses. but the idea is the same. support the weight with your bones using as little muscle as possible

August 3rd

Rolled exclusively with one guy, he's preppign for a fight, bigger and stronger than I am with some of the heaviest hips I have ever felt. Legs like tree trunks.

It was sort of a intresting night. In lieu of his up coming fight I gave up my normal top heavy get on top stay on top, find a sub game that I've been working and went ape shit crazy trying to press the pass. For me to play this game takes a lot out of me and I figured I would have to call it early but the cardio held out.

It really turned into a tap fest between us. No idea of who had more, We were both tapping early(he had the fight, I was tired workign out on one hour sleep)

But got the better of more scrambles than normal. But got caught as he is really good at baiting passes and hitting odd ball sub setups. I had to pull out a few of my own and turned to my leg lock game. Since he has great top half control I ended up turning out to deep half and going under more than I ever have. Which simply resulted in a foot race to see who would capitalize first. I got stuck on bottom sprawl some(did I mention his his are heavy So I actually got to work some of my new wrestling based escapes from there, Mixed success. ended up giving up my back more than I wanted.

I almost pulled off my half guard straight arm bar, which on him would have been huge, and a gogo(which I never use) Did get a knee bar, two or three varations of ankle locks, an omo, and some various straight arm bars.

I tapped to an omo, a kimura, and some catch chokes/neck cranks(it seems the more tired I am the more I gag odd but true) I also got caught in a triangle to straight armbar transistion and somehow by an inverted triangle durign a scramble.

I am pleased with tonight as my new wrestling based escapes seem to have merit when I get stuck and can't just turn back under. Also was happy to be ending up on top or a good postion during scrambles more since this is a major weakness of mine Also had a few beatiful armbar escapes where i used speed alot more than usual(i actually felt them coming which hasn't happened on a regular basis since I cut back to once or twice a week)
 
idk what all this rolling on the ground with men is about, but id better see some 100 pound OA clean and presses soon!

August 4th
MMA

I did a whole lot of rounds tonight, I lost count around 10. All of them with the quicker faster but lighter guys. I really have to battle their speed and sometimes I win sometimes I lose. Tonight I did both. I have noticed progress in my ability to match speed as I have gotten stronger. One of them in particular I have incrediable amounts of trouble staying with, he's young and smaller than me but quick and a top notch wrestler. He blends that wrestling with an inventive submission game. I fit to control him despite the size I have.

Well tonight was able for the first time to actually scramble with him with success. At times I felt I was body surfing during the transistions but I am happy with the improvement

As you can tell the clean session I had no plan but wanted to play with some power cleans so I mixed them in. I was really tanked more than I should have from MMA the night before and felt it through out the work out. I had planned to do 305 x 1 x 5 but didn't feel I had it in me at all but am happy with getting a good group of heavy singles off the floor.

THe one handed cleans/press were fun. I didn't know where to start with them so I grabbed a 30lb DB and started there. I think I will start around 45 and move up 5 pounds per set next time I do them to try to find a more challenging weight. but I will do them again.

In other related news

I was going to have my body fat tested today, but the machine's batteries were dead and he had a meeting so no time to do a pinch test. Hopefully I will remember next week.

I went to the lake last week and about the time I took my shirt off a girl said,

You've gotten skinny and before I could even shoot her a disapproving look she added,

Not skinny like fit skinny, you look good.

I'm not sure how to take that or what it means but its better than God your fat put your shirt back on.
 
thats why i use the term lean. skinny is for anorexic weaklings and you're only half that lollerskates

also good to start low on OA clean until you get a feel for it
