This was the Oilers I watched during the regular season. Prior to the playoffs, none of us really expected them to win or even go deep. I guess you could say LA choked, but it begs the question what happened with Vegas and Dallas. It seemed like neither team could hit the net on their scoring chances when they played the Oilers.

I think even if they can afford McDavid, he will be gone. He'll go to some southern US team where no one cares about hockey and he can just play the game and not have an entire city on his back and promptly win a cup.

Why on earth would he want to go to Toronto and be in the exact same situation he was in in Edmonton? The pressure of being the great hope on a Canadian team breaks guys.

His contract is up after next season right? So can't he go anywhere? LA or New York would obviously be attractive for a guy with $100M in the bank and a desire to win a cup.

RFA this summer. Cant let him leave as free agent thats for sure. Kings made playoffs with 21m under the cap. Kopitar and Doughty retiring in 1-2 years thats 18m more space in cap.
Kings can get him even with improved contract and would make things interesting in west (McDavid Kings, Vegas, Dallas, Colorado, Oilers, Jets).

I dunno. Do you think his goal is to win the cup or do you think his goal is to max out on getting paid ?

If his goal is the cup he should take a pay cut and stay put so that Edmonton can get more depth. Making it to the finals twice in a row says they are as close as a team can be and a few tweaks and they very well might do it. It would imo also signal that him and Edmonton are serious about a cup , serious contenders and make other stars in search of that elusive cup want to be on Edmonton too and maybe they also might play for a few bucks less than they could get elsewhere if the chance of winning is that high.


But if his goal is to get paid as much as possible before he retires he should totally try his hand at free agency and see what happens

I don't think the NHL will go for that again. There is speculation that they used Gretzky to go to big market L.A. to try to increase viewership from a big market team and it just didn't work. As big of a market as L.A. is, it's hardly a sports city and Gretzky going there didn't really boost anything. And he probably missed out on several more cups because of it.

I think there's probably a balance there. He wants to get paid and he wants to win a cup, for sure.

I really do think the pressure of the Canadian media is bad for guys mentally though.

If he was in Dallas, he could enjoy his summer in relative anonymity. Here, there's going to be an article about him every day all summer.
