NHL 24/25 - Still did better than Vancouver

I sort of feel like what he is worth actually makes him a liability for a team in the cap era though. At the end of the day he's one man and it takes a team to win a cup and it's much harder to make happen when one guy is 30 percent of the budget.

100% on this too.

It's like taking Apaphys in your Empire of Dust army at 2300 pts. Yes he's great, but he's almost 400 pts and you have to build your whole list around him. If you play him wrong he gets stuck in combat with a legion of zombies and spends the entire game grinding a unit worth half as many points as he is.

Well if his goal was to win a cup he'd go play in Florida for $1.

I think there's probably a balance there. He wants to get paid and he wants to win a cup, for sure.

I really do think the pressure of the Canadian media is bad for guys mentally though.

If he was in Dallas, he could enjoy his summer in relative anonymity. Here, there's going to be an article about him every day all summer.

I doubt the media pressure affects him much. He seems like the type of guy to put a lot of pressure on himself. I'm not sure who he goes to if he leaves. Would probably depend on how different teams look next year. Would be very surprised at NY or LA. I'm half expecting STL to make a big jump.

RFA this summer. Cant let him leave as free agent thats for sure. Kings made playoffs with 21m under the cap. Kopitar and Doughty retiring in 1-2 years thats 18m more space in cap.
Kings can get him even with improved contract and would make things interesting in west (McDavid Kings, Vegas, Dallas, Colorado, Oilers, Jets).

Hmmm I didn't know LA had that much cap space. That makes it more likely for sure.

Thanks bud. Ima so happy

I don't think the NHL will go for that again. There is speculation that they used Gretzky to go to big market L.A. to try to increase viewership from a big market team and it just didn't work. As big of a market as L.A. is, it's hardly a sports city and Gretzky going there didn't really boost anything. And he probably missed out on several more cups because of it.

Gretzky was traded due to Oilers financial troubles.

I'd be shocked if Edmonton can sign him.

Connor McDavid ($17.5M projected)
Leon Draisaitl ($14M)
Darnell Nurse ($9.25M)
Evan Bouchard ($10.75M projected)

Total $51.5 million, or about 55% of the Oilers’ projected salary cap of $95.35 million for 4 players.

The funniest outcome would be McDavid leaving and then the Oilers winning the next year. Even beating his team along the way. Obviously unlikely, but there's a non-zero chance...

This was the Oilers I watched during the regular season. Prior to the playoffs, none of us really expected them to win or even go deep. I guess you could say LA choked, but it begs the question what happened with Vegas and Dallas. It seemed like neither team could hit the net on their scoring chances when they played the Oilers.

it's probably time for edmonton to get a better goalie when every time i look up at the clock it reads 5 past skinner.

Most of us in Edmonton want a good goalie largely just to see what it's like. We had Roloson for a few years, but I think only 1 when the Oilers were good. Management here never prioritizes it. Skinner has become a laughing stock around the sport too. But they're going to be strapped for cash again. I'm not sure what they do tbh.

Who's been the last good goalie? Tommy Salo? Late career Khabibulin?

Well, barring a Bruins/Leafs-like miraculous comeback, this shit is over.

As much as the Leafs' ineptitude hurts my soul, I don't want to imagine what it would be like to lose back to back SCF's to the same damn team. These opportunities don't come along too often.

And the chance may never come again...
Just imagine how those early 90's Bills felt.....

Roloson was the last really good one who you could count on to steal games. Before that Salo and Cujo. They actually had typically good goaltending for a while.

They drafted Dubnyk, but he didn't get really good until after leaving.

Consensus around the internet seems to be that next season will be McDavid last season in Edmonton. What do you guys think?
Really just depends on how attached he is to the franchise. Crosby took some generous pay cuts to stay in Pittsburg. I mean, he's been to the finals year after year now, and seems pretty tight with the core. I don't know if he'll want to just throw that away for a gamble with another team.

On a semi-related topic, I bet Matthew Tkachuk is quite happy he thumbed his nose at Calgary.

Crosby also won a cup within his first few years, and that likely solidified his devotion to the franchise. His connections to Mario are likely another catalyst.

McDavid to the Jets.....wait for it.
