Oh well. We still have a chance at winning Stanley's Cup...

i bet a canadian will score the cup winning goal, just like they did 4 out of the last 6 years and 9 out of the last 14.

the cup got paraded through my city 3 times since 2010 cause one of the blackhawks lives here. he also potted a cup winner.

Probably one of the best pure hockey games I've ever seen. No lulls in the action. They were going 100% at all times, and there was barely any room to breathe out there for both teams. Barely any penalties, and the goalies made them earn everything. Just an excellent game all around. I think the US outplayed them ever so slightly and were a lot crisper with the puck, and probably deserved one of those crazy chances in OT to go in. Dude had three "saves of the year" candidates in a matter of two minutes.

Speaking of Binnington, I apologize for my earlier remarks in this thread...

It was indeed one of the best games I've ever seen in 35+ years of watching hockey. And I agree that US did look cleaner in general.

Goaltending was definitely the weak spot on paper but Cup Champ Binnington decided to prove us all wrong.

Great win.
I'm in the same boat as are many others. Boy, was he clutch tonight.

Every fan knew that on paper, our weak spot appeared to be goaltending. Unfounded? Maybe. But I certainly felt the same.

We should know by now though that all kinds of people can shine under the spotlight and a Stanley Cup champ certainly did that. Binnington proved the doubters wrong for certain and made a few save of the year contenders when it mattered most. I feel like that alone should have earned him the MVP nod (but I'm a bit biased as I was a goalie for 15 years growing up!)

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but Canada needed the most stacked team imaginable in MacKinnon, McDavid, Crosby, Makar etc... to force a 1-1 tie against a country that barely even moderately cares about hockey and they couldn't even win in regulation. Lol.

the most stacked team imaginable? you just named off the only 4 guys on the team. the rest of them wouldn't have even cracked the 2010 or 2016 olympic rosters or even the world cup of hockey either, aside from a past-his-prime doughty who was probably only put on the team because of his past success in international hockey competitions.

only losers make excuses. maybe the states should come up with some better hockey talent and then they won't keep getting destroyed by canada in every best-on-best competition since like forever.

but you have gotta give those losers some credit. they've came a long way. it wasn't too long ago where all they had was patrick kane and ryan kesler. now after the best defenseman in the league decided to sit out to heal a nagging injury, i guess their best player available is a guy who plays for the leafs and always chokes in boston. not sure why they would want a guy like that on their team, except that seems to be the best they have to offer. maybe the states can develop some better talent by the time the olympics rolls around next year, otherwise they're just playing for a silver medal at best.

i mean the states can't even beat canada in any games that count for anything when canada only had 4 players on their team lol. none of those losers are even worthy of drinking the broth from thomas harley's jockstrap.

americans just suck at hockey, and canadians are much more talented. don't hate, appreciate. there is no need to be salty or try to make excuses and downplay that epic beatdown that murrica received from the 4 nations champions last night. when it comes to hockey, america is canada's bitch, and they have proved it time and time again. perhaps one of these years they might finally be able to beat team canada in professional level best-on-best hockey. just not this year!

Troll

i'm calling it how it is. if america wants to beat canada in best-on-best hockey they need to develop some better talent, because the best they had to offer wasn't talented enough to get the job done when it mattered.

if you ain't first, you're last. shake and bake!

The answer is to just annex Canada and take their players imo.

This wasn't really close to being one of Canada's most stacked teams in a best on best. If you want stacked teams, you can start with the '87 and '91 Canada Cups, '96 World Cup etc. It wasn't our most stacked team either.

It's funny that when we beat Canada in '96 we were having this exact same conversation about the US catching up and beating "the most stacked" Canadian team. It's been almost 30 years and not much has changed. Both countries produce great teams but Canada continues to just edge us out more often than not.

Also, the "we don't care" nonsense is hilarious. We have ten times the population and far more money to throw around. We've had the "well, we don't care as much" attitude for as long as I can remember. I guarantee you every person on the US team would laugh at that statement.

Binnington is still a pussy.
I remember the gratuitous slash on Thornton in '19 as he
brushed the crease.
Lucky he didn't get Mrazeked, lol.

I'm not talking about the 80s or 90s I'm talking about the most talented players today. And I never implied the players on team USA don't care as much. I'm saying America as a whole doesn't pursue hockey.

"Imaginable" kind of implies it's better than anything we've ever seen but regardless, the teams were pretty even imho with each team having some advantages here and there. It's hard to claim Canada had the most stacked team imaginable using current players considering everyone was making fun of their goaltending. Their top end forwards are slightly better, our goaltending was slightly better etc.

Per capita, hockey isn't as popular but the raw numbers of people/youth playing are pretty close to even. However, quality of youth programs are arguably better in the US at this point and the amount of money isn't comparable. It's weird to even bother with the "we don't care as much" when we actually have certain things in our favor.

damn, college hockey has come a long way.
just watched #10 Penn State beat #1 Michigan State in a shootout.
as good as any NHL game I've seen recently.
these kids are good.

Unfortunately most schools in the south don't have NCAA hockey because of Title IX but we do have AAU club hockey at least.

If the market for hockey in America was as big as the NFL America would dominate. Enough programs would be made available nationwide and when the young talent goes pro it'd be all over. Canada barely avoided getting swept with their country's best players.
