I'm about to get totally geeky and you probably don't want to read this. It will improve your life very little if at all. I'm doing this mostly for myself and if you enjoy it, great. You have been warned.

More than any decade, the 80s are my favorite. It's probably because I was born in '74 and the nostalgia of my childhood hits hard from many, many songs from the era. I can't make a solid argument that it is the best decade for music. Only 8 albums (that weren't greatest hits) from the 80s are in the top 100 best albums of all time on Rolling Stone's list (though we all know pretentious RS magazine is). That's a pretty despicable representation, but I can't argue to the contrary. The 80s take me back to a simpler time.

When determining my top #1 80s song, I have three categories:

1. Is it an amazing song musically? Do I like the song because of the way it is written, arranged, orchestrated, and/or performed? This category would probably lead me into some obscure deep cut on an album. Some examples (obscure might be debatable):

2. Does it give me a sense of nostalgia? Does it take me back to a particular time in my life to the point where I can almost feel the 80s again? This would be different for everyone, naturally, but some of these just stick out to me like sore thumbs. Hell, I don't necessarily even like the songs a lot. Some examples:

3. Does it represent what I consider to be the sound of the 80s? Does the song have the typical trademarks of what people used to try and sell albums at the time? Of course, my musical leanings at the time were much more toward Depeche Mode and not so much Metallica. I grew up in Southern California and we have an iconic radio station that is, for me at least, a go-to with regards to the classic 80s sound to me. They played a boatload of post punk and new wave bands. This is the 80s to me. Some examples:

When all is said and done, and after spending awhile making this post, I've realized what song for me encapsulates all three categories better than any other song for the 80s. Thanks for reading!

KROQ was probably the best radiostation in the 80s but it turned to shit when they changed their programming in the 90s . They started to phase out post punk bands in favor of recycled 70s garage rock. WLIR was another great 80s station in Long Island
