So I'm starting my second cup of coffee this morning and reading the paper and I read a front-page article that starts "A popular Union County teacher described by family and friends as a devoted dad, teacher and coach was fatally wounded in a shootout when he and his brother-in-law tried to rob members of a Mexican drug cartel."

I'd file that under "biting off more than you can chew" or "should have stuck to your day job".

Happy Friday.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Motherfucker watched too many movies.

Seems unlikely this was his first go on the roundabout, he rocked up in a vest with gloves on and executed the guy in the stash house before the others rocked up. Supposedly the coach and his brother in law had been tracking the gang with electronic tags. What kind of family man would pick a fight with the Sinaloa cartel?

This is where I may come of as an irrational conservative but in some cases maybe barring the new tech firm isn't a bad idea from the perspective of the existing residents if failing to do so will radically change the character of the neighborhood and price out most of the existing residents.

Sure one locality could say no and it that would keep prices down for rent. If land owners were mostly non resident landlords then local property owners would not be a concern. If all the new jobs would go to new residents as opposed the local residents, they would not care about that either. What you do lose is all the economic trickle down benefits (not in the classic sense but think in terms of local businesses benefiting from more affluent residents) and local tax revenues. As a wealth transfers from existing owners to tenants you also could discourage future home building. From a more macro perspective it feels like horrible economic policy. It's basically regionalized real estate protectionism that if practiced widely, would create economic ghettos, and cause the prices of existing hot sport to sky rocket even worse.

Apparently the shertards aren't even pretending to not be racist anymore

That was one of the worst threads I've ever read on here. It was a straight up white supremacist thread filled with white supremacists, which apparently number in the dozens going off both the comments and co-signs. I guess they thought they were being cute? So Ugly. How miserable are these people's actual lives?

There used to be another female poster here with pretty extensive knowledge of sports (which you seem to have) who I used to shoot the shit with. Just wanted to see if you were her return. Trust me it's a compliment.
i don't really know that much about sports except for basketball and football (soccer). i have posted here a while i just more stayed in group chats but all my buds have left.

Well isn't the argument against gentrification that the affluent residents don't necessarily patronize the local businesses but rather set up their own that cater to their affluent tastes which, combined with the increased property values and rising rents, leads to the original residents being displaced?

Maybe that doesn't even happen and even if it does the displaced residents might still be better off if the economy of the city grows overall such that when they are displaced to a different part of the town they still benefit from the economic expansion. I'm just throwing out what I see to be the standard argument against so called gentrification.

Yes, it does happen. And no, they aren't necessarily better off--they mostly just have to travel farther for goods and services.

I'm not super well read on this stuff so I am going to cautiously make these claims if that makes sense.
<{ByeHomer}>
Wait what are you reacting to? I don't get it...

I don't fucking get it, man. It simultaneously breaks my heart and enrages me.

This sounds like a Breaking Bad spinoff

Yeah, I don't throw that label around lightly either (in fact, virtually never). I know what was going on in that thread and if there were any lines to read between, they were very clearly defined. The sentiment was downright fucking vile. And then this absolute clown car of an OP in the same day:

UNREAL.

I think you're selling yourself short. Your basketball knowledge is what stood out to me though. Yeah, people come and go here pretty often. You just hope for the best when people lose contact
