LIke they just did with MS13 and Tren de Aragua

It's pretty bad in LA and cities like Chicago. The crimes they commit, the innocents that die each year that get caught up in their shootings. The people they rob and kill, the homes they break into.

Would you support labeling all street gangs as terrorists?

"Terrorist" is a label that comes with some heavy costs if they are arrested and charged. Is that the best thing to help deter joining a gang and committing violence? I believe there are enhancements to charges based on having a gang affiliation. Maybe just make those more severe instead?

The actual designation is Foreign Terrorist Organization. They would need to create an entire new classification for American street gangs. Most of the provisions for FTO are financial restrictions which likely wouldn’t be effective against street gangs.

Never happen. There are states that dismantled gang task force's, because it was magically disproportionately affecting this one group of people, for some odd reason...

In Denmark they passed a law for gangs. Any crime that is found to be gang related automatically doubles the sentence. Something like that could work.

You give every "street gang" a terrorism label and you get two things:

A: Anybody can be labeled a member of a street gang, and therefore a terrorist, by this administration.
B: Terrorism charges are almost always tried on a federal level, meaning this administration will be in control of the case.

So in other words...fuck no.

Slippery slope. Gang affiliation can be loose sometimes. "So and so used to run with ________ clique but hasn't in awhile." Or "Dude's older brother is with this set, but I don't think he's in that crew."

Are you adding punishment to someone for just associating with gang members if they commit a crime even if they aren't "officially" in that gang?

Gangs are a scourge but imo this would become dicey territory to enter if you start labeling them terrorists.

A dead baby or two a week per city from a stray bullet isn't a big deal. If we do something about it, we'll have even more black and brown people behind bars and that is so much worse than dead babies.

not unless we just want to lie about what a terrorist is.

terrorism /tĕr′ə-rĭz″əm/

noun

  1. The use of violence or the threat of violence, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political goals.
  2. The act of terrorizing, or state of being terrorized; a mode of government by terror or intimidation.
  3. The practise of coercing governments to accede to political demands by committing violence on civilian targets; any similar use of violence to achieve goals.

I think the better way to deal with gangs is to prosecute them under the RICO act. Major street gangs are indeed criminal organizations with members and a hiarchy. Sentences are stiff and the net can be cast wide enough to grab large groups of people at once. If used aggressively you can dismantle the entire gang population in a handful of prosecutions.

The bad part is there will inevitably be "innocent" people being sent to prison for simply associating with gangs members. But hey, that will send the message to people to keep yourself completely seperate from gang members and gang activity. No getting tattoos or throwing up signs in pictures on Instagram just to look cool. And no hanging out or associating with gang members in any setting whatsoever.

When gangs become so powerful they eventually infiltrate politics, so it's not entirely false.

We have a long backlog of organizations that need to be designated terrorist groups.

Starting with United Fruit and working our way up to United Healthcare.
