Would you enact vengeance?

They don't show much other than the victim and the mayor. Basically some teenagers are going around trying to knock people out for fun. They succeeded with this 50 something year old guy and the mayor was the first one to find him. When they went to court, the 14 year old female witness didn't show up because she was intimidated and the prosecutor was forced to drop all charges. The boys all cheered and high fived each other. Not too long after, a couple of the boys cornered the guy again in a parking lot and were about to jump him again when he pulled out pepper spray and they ran.

This would be witness intimidation in my state, a felony. Seem people get serious time for that.

I would get a concealed weapon and if they threaten the guy again, start shooting down range. Preferably a .45 Colt 1911 performance series.

This makes me so damn angry just watching the video, even though I don't know the victim. If he was someone close I doubt I could control myself, I'd be obsessed with getting revenge on those criminals. I rationally understand revenge doesn't really help, but in this situation I'd be so furious I doubt I could think rationally.

For vengeance, it's hard to beat Inigo Montoya in "Princess Bride"

Here's a link for a list of the safest and most dangerous cities in the U.S. (unfortunately, my home city is on the bad side.)
http://www.morganquitno.com/xcit06pop.htm#CITIES

Do you know what criteria they're using to quantify "dangerous"?

I didn't see anything on the page.

Curious because I know they killin' errbody in Chicago, but it didn't show up on the list anywhere. Maybe this is because it's just gang killings in a very confined area, and outside of that Chicago is not a dangerous place (my theory).

What would I do if it happened to me?

Well, if I had sufficient funds and contacts, I would outsource the demise of these asswipes. That seems excessive I know, but you can't just have someone merely even the score and kick their asses. If you ever act against anyone, you must do so in a way that you need never fear their revenge.

Otherwise, I would do nothing other than take more precautions to protect myself. The risk/reward value just is not there.

Not sure, exactly. But, my recollection is a metric of "violent crime" (armed robberies, assault, etc). If it was straight up murder, then, yeah, Chicago is near the top - mostly in the south side tho. I think Detroit still has it beat overall when you take into account the whole city. There's some articles on this, if I remember right, in the Economist

I wouldn't be the least bit upset if I saw a news update tomorrow that says that all of those "kids" were murdered. I have no sympathy for violent criminals, no matter what age they are.

The biggest deal for me is that they went back and tried to do it again. Obviously, they've got no remorse for what they did wrong. If they felt bad and wanted to repent, it would be a different story.

Unless they turned themselves in before they got busted, they would only feel bad that they got caught, in my opinion. Repenting after being caught is pointless.

If you think shattering some innocent, unsuspecting person's jaw for no reason other than your own amusement is OK, then you do not to deserve to enjoy, benefit from, or be protected by the rights put in place by civilized society - you simply are not worthy.

Your user name makes my genitals feel uneasy but I agree with everything you said there.

Dude should have soaked those fuckers down in pepper spray and then stomped on their nuts.

Also, I can't help but think that the dude just looks the part of a victim. He probably carries himself like a sad sack of shit, which is why the teens targeted him.

This violent behavior will escalate. Violence among strangers, in a cowardly way targeting an old man, for the sake of violence itself shows these kids will probably do things much worse later in life. They should have been taken to an institution and evaluated. Now someone will lose their life in the future from their release if they continue thier path, and they will serve as nothing more than money makers for the prison industrial complex.

Well said, Sir 'Burglar. I couldn't agree more.

Here's another reference (again w/ St. Louis as #1 most dangerous city - it pretty much always is every year). This one has the methodology: The rankings are based on a city's rate for six crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft.

Pathetic. Hope that guy gets a weapon and learns to defend himself. It sickens me that people go around attacking guys like this for no reason.

The point is that I wouldn't enact vengeance if they were repentant.
