Both guys went on the downhill slide once they started thinking that they were boxers. When BJ relied on his grappling, he was phenomenal. He didn't seem to understand that the threat of his grappling is why he was so successful on the feet. Once he represented zero threat on the ground, his striking got exposed, kind of. He was one of the first guys to utilize a good jab, and his hands were pretty decent, but overall he just wasn't a very versatile striker on the feet, especially during the latter part of his career. Conor had more tools as a striker but he'd be lost if it went to the ground with BJ.
