Working on the MT Kick

my gym has been lucky enough to have Kronphet Phetrachapat and Thunder Chum Phae teaching the classes for the past 2 weeks...they throw their low kicks in a similar fashion

Rung Reung Chai? what gym do you train at?

Inquisitus Kru Yod seems to be turning the shoulder before the hip.

In the gif above of Pornsaneh he also seems to do it.

sorry i haven't replied to this, just saw it. I think what i meant by behind was not the timing but the position/orientation of the shoulder. My point is much better illustrated at 0:28 to 0:33 than the word "behind".

Definitely a poor choice of words on my part.

they mention hip rotation in that vid yet i see very little of it based on how i was taught to kick.

One of the take home messages from this thread is that there isn't really a right way to do the kick. In almost all of these videos by legit professionals, they are doing it differently.

In retrospect, I still like my lean back instead of slipping with weight forward way of doing the kick.

I've seen and heard step to the inside, to the outside, rotate 90, rotate 180, spin all the way around, never spin all the way around, and so on and on.

I do appreciate all of the advice. I think the new way of kicking I got from this thread, slipping and keeping the weight forward on the low kick, and standing up tall and not leaning back on the mid kick are really cool and valuable. I've been using them in sparring a little bit and have a legit MT instructor in real life now to help.

I'll post one last video of me kicking so that you can see that it still isn't great, but that I have been trying to apply it and then I'll let this thread die.

Thank you all for the help. I really appreciate it.

Eh, nevermind. The video looks like shit. I'm getting it but it is so awkward kicking this heavy bag. It just swings too much. I'm either chasing it or barely touching it.

Kicking in the air, I slip too late in the kick. I'll not start the slip until the kick starts to go so that the initial step looks like I'm afraid to put my foot in cold water.

Oh well, Rome wasn't built in a night.

you're correct. Kronphet said it depends on the school/camp you train at. some teach it this way, others this way....he showed us two different body kick version...the standard whip it around and the faster one where it's like you're almost driving it straight up.

This is more like the original way I was taught to throw. Standing up and leaning back a little to stay out of range rather than slipping, and spinning all the way around if I feel like it.

"When shadow boxing, make sure you kick all the way through."

Definitely the old way I learned it.

Thanks.

Even if my skill isn't much improved, I feel like this thread massively increased my knowledge and appreciation.

that video is not a very good example of it. i refuse to take anything seriously from "The Academy," since their "instructors" seem like a bunch of assholes. their "testing" video is a good example...my favorite example is at 1:56, when the "instructor" smashes the fat asian kid's face with the edge of the Thai pad:

i saw the comments and a couple of them seem like real dicks and assholes. i would not wanna train in an environment with people like that there. all that name calling and childish shit made me think i was back in elementary school

its a shame i would have to go to farang instructors for hardcore training like this, since my Thai instructors wont instruct us in this manner.

i think if my Kru saw us posting like those in the comments section...he'd kick us out. that just makes the whole gym look bad

Try this:

i was joking with the above post.

i know...i wasn't directly responding to the farang instructor post.

i was just mad turned off by the comments of those who actually went to that school

well, you know the culture comes from the instructors. not surprising to see comments like that from their students.
