Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

You called it. Looks like the UFC has cut Penne. She is one of those fighters who I feel would have been better served if she just fought in Japan almost her entire career.

sad but not surprised. nothing to stop jessica from fighting elsewhere, but i think she's setting herself up well post-ufc career with real estate, OF, and of course the podcast :)

Well GDR has taken herself out of the rankings after the media loved keeping her there on only a loss. She had some good fights along the way although I've never forgotten her "winning" via late strikes vs Holm and ducking cyborg after. I do feel that the UFC should have gotten her on a Nov/Dec card like she wanted.
Hopefully Cavalcanti will get this spot she's more than earned it over GDR/Chandler/Perez and Avila due to inactivity. Who is now without an opponent for Jan 11th.

Sad to say she may be only one of two former women champions in the UFC that may never get to the UFC Hall of Fame. The other being Nicco Montano (spelling?). I've said it in another thread but I will put it here as well. They just need to end the Women's Bantamweight Division. GDR was listed as the #13 Bantamweight in the rankings and Tate is above her.

You have two women in the top 15 of the division that were professionally fighting before the Great Recession in 2008. That division needs a lot of help and I don't think it's going to get better.

Thanks @werepig. Much appreciated Happy halloween everyone.

That's an interesting matchup for sure Rosa much more skilled striker but Perez has a path to victory if she gets it to the ground.
i still refuse to believe ailin perez is good! if she beats karol rosa then i will... probably cry 😭

I've said it in another thread but I will put it here as well. They just need to end the Women's Bantamweight Division. GDR was listed as the #13 Bantamweight in the rankings and Tate is above her.
wbw outside of the ufc is pretty dire too... that said i don't think the ufc division should end. instead, i wish there were a gym or meeting place where women's bantamweights could train with each other and get better that way. in interviews, female fighters have often mentioned the benefits of training with other women, especially of a similar size (apologies for the vagueness but i can't think of a specific interview right now).

i remember looking at darya zhelez's recent fight in paris and wondering who she even trained with bc of how out of step she looked. compare that to joselyne edwards' last fight where she looked light years improved - a quick glance on IG showed that she'd been training with val in panama and look the difference that made (ok yes val is the flw champ but still) just my 2c

Jasudavicius and Blanchfied via consistency.

Not comfortable with either pick.
I want to bet on Jasmine also...

But everytime i bet against Lipski, she wins... And everytime i bet on her, i lose lol.
Tapology have me 5-7 on Lipski

About Erin... Well... I think Rose has the tools to take a UD from her.

I believe she takes a win here and she'll make us interested in seing her against Shev or Grasso.

All this doom and gloom about Bantamweight is justified, but we could also see it the other way:

Kayla Harrison, Macy Chiasson, and Norma Dumont are in top 5. That's three new names in a Top 5 that rarely sees any movement. GDR is gone, Aldana, Holm, and Tate have their days numbered. Josiane Nunes, Chelsea Chandler, Ailin Perez, Cornelle (spelling?), Calvacanti, Zhelesnyakova, among others are working their way into relevancy.

The division has seen more movement recently, than it did when Nunes was champ. Sure, there's only two stand out talents in Harrison and Dumont, but developing the fighters takes time.

I'm surprised Rose is the underdog for the main event, she's got much more 'big fight' experience (and mostly won) while Blanchfield came up short on both her 'break out' fights for the top - not quite there yet - and has only scored 2 takedowns in her last 5 fights (one was due to an Andrade wardrobe malfunction, the other was against Molly the Can). Plus ppl aren't talking enough about Rose comfortably coasting to victory in 5 rounds over Cortez (the best wrestler in that division possibly?) and Ribas (another solid grappler with better takedowns than Blanchfield), crusing on the feet and even outgrappling them both somewhat. Seems like it should be pretty easy for Rose other than the chance of Blanchfield snatching a choke.

In the others I'll pick Jasmine (Lipski hasn't done well vs wrestling in the past although she's better now and Jaz is rather slow so she has a chance but gotta make the obvious choice here - just plz don't break her pretty face (again) Jaz!) and Horth (Petrovic has been pretty underwhelming so far - while Horth is under-the radar good.... well maybe 'under the radar okayish' at least; she has a good body kick which might work a lot vs PetRock).

Erin is more scrappy than cortez. She'll get hit a lot, but I think eventually her pressure and pace will get to rose. Maybe a close decision for Blanchfield or late stoppage.

Jasmine vs. Lipski is tough. Jasmine has a great chin, but she relies on it a lot and that can get her in trouble against one of the few big punchers in that division, and lipsky's been better about shutting down wrestling. Lipski is hot and cold though so.....no idea.
