Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

Rose Namajunas vs. Erin Blanchfield. Namajunas by finish. Fiorot's early hard shot exposed flaws in Blanchfield's defense. She looked nearly unconscious and flatfooted. Still like her Jersey cohorts she never quit. Never know what you'll get with Rose from a head space and coaching perspective. Her game plan should be simple. Jump start like gangbusters. Box her up. Go for a finsih via athleticism.

Ariane Lipski vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius. Jasudavicius by decision for intangible reasons. It's in Edmunton, her home eh?

Jamey-Lyn Horth vs. Ivana Petrović. Horth by decision. Again, fighters in Canada seem to perform better at home. Otherwise I'd pick Petrović.

Love being able to copy and paste for name spellings and reminder of starts times especially in my legal cannabis time zone. Thanks again werep for picking up the slack Thanks to the OG's who started this this thread long before I arrived.

Heading to a music festival within walking distance. Should make it home da fightz, mildly buzzed.

Enjoy the fights and the weekend.

I'm surprised Rose is the underdog for the main event, she's got much more 'big fight' experience (and mostly won) while Blanchfield came up short on both her 'break out' fights for the top - not quite there yet - and has only scored 2 takedowns in her last 5 fights (one was due to an Andrade wardrobe malfunction, the other was against Molly the Can). Plus ppl aren't talking enough about Rose comfortably coasting to victory in 5 rounds over Cortez (the best wrestler in that division possibly?) and Ribas (another solid grappler with better takedowns than Blanchfield), crusing on the feet and even outgrappling them both somewhat. Seems like it should be pretty easy for Rose other than the chance of Blanchfield snatching a choke.

I think it comes down to the style matchup, Cortez mostly consented to a long range kickboxing match vs. Rose and got comfortably outscored until she started putting the pressure on in the 5th round. Erin is less likely to do that, she tends to be more in your face and likes to get up close in the clinch which is Rose's weak spot. It's a tougher style for Rose to deal with, she's generally had problems with pressure fighters and doesn't fight all that well in the clinch, if Erin can get there consistently she should have the cardio to wear Rose down. And of course there's always the chance of Erin grabbing a sub out of nowhere in a fight where she's getting her ass beat, it's happened in like half her fights.

Somebody sit Erin's ass down and make her watch Valentina Shevchenko, because her takedowns need A LOT of work.

Somebody sit her ass down and make her watch Harrison in the PFL, when she was taking down her opponents with explosive double legs and judo trips.

She'll never get past Shevchenko or Fiorot unless they have a brain fart.

I'll just repost this here.

I like Blanchfield's chances over 5 rounds. She's got that dog in her and will pressure Rose for the full 25 minutes.
I should have listened to myself

Erin is more scrappy than cortez. She'll get hit a lot, but I think eventually her pressure and pace will get to rose. Maybe a close decision for Blanchfield or late stoppage.

Jasmine vs. Lipski is tough. Jasmine has a great chin, but she relies on it a lot and that can get her in trouble against one of the few big punchers in that division, and lipsky's been better about shutting down wrestling. Lipski is hot and cold though so.....no idea.

Got the first fight right. Lipski continues to disappoint. That's like two fights now since her husband became her coach where she's looked worse and worse.

Misssed the fights live, was driving to country early this morning.

First fight was ok - but the decision seemed 100% home cooked to me, which is a bummer.
Lipski vs Jasudavicius was quite ok - and I am glad it ended in a nice submisssion instead of a hometown 30-25 (it would have been a simple 29-28) to make be bummed. I was amused by Jasmine's corner saying "you stole that round" - they knew what was up.

Yay for Erin. No Canadians involved so it was solid decision.

My word of the day is "underhooks". Women really need to start learning cage wrestling and how to a)get an underhook in, and b)use it correctly to get off the fence. Horth was the worst at it, she'd hand fight and get her hand pummeled through for the underhook, but instead of pushing through and wrapping up she'd pull her arm back out and hand fight all over again just to end up in the same spot, and then pull out again. Like, what are you doing???

Would've liked to see Jasmine go for the takedowns earlier instead of kickboxing with Ariane for most of the 1st round, she wasn't doing too badly but it's still not the best idea. On one hand it's nice to see that Jasmine has confidence in her standup and she isn't afraid to bang if she has to, but she's also getting punched in the face more than needed.

Thought Rose was going to cruise to another boring win after the first 2 rounds, Erin, like many of Rose's opponents had consented to a long range kickboxing match which she was clearly losing. Then in the 3rd round she remembered that Rose doesn't like pressure fighters or getting hit in the body and started doing those things which completely turned the fight around. Rose got hurt with body kicks and really didn't like it, she started getting pushed back and tried loading up with big punches to keep Erin off her, when that didn't work she panic wrestled and got worked over some more on the ground. Sustained pressure and body work breaks Rose every time, but only Karolina, Andrade, and Erin have figured this out so far.

As for Erin, she seems to have stagnated and I'm not seeing the improvements which I should be seeing in a young fighter like her. She has a good ground game but still sucks ass at getting fights down to the mat, she should not be struggling to drag opponents to the ground when she has double underhooks and a full body lock, my high school wrestling coach would be disappointed. Striking also needs work, like Jasmine she's not afraid to stand & trade, but also like Jazzy J she gets punched in the face a lot. I'd say toss her in with Grasso or Natalia Silva next and see if she can gut her way to a win.

I gotta say I really think Horth won, the 30-27 was outlandishly bad she clearly lost a round but the other two she was doing better than Pet on he feet everything she landed had Pet running like cyborg hit her. Seems like some are so upset about a bad scorecard they're crying robbery even if the right girl won.

Jazz got a great finish and a well earned 50k .

Erin got a nice win over Rose. I really think her round 1&2 performance is being underrated she lost those rounds but she put in alot of good work to Rose's legs and by round four rose was really lethargic getting away from punches. Alot of you critical of her TDs which have room for improvement but it still has only been fiorot's strength that's stopped her. Grasso, val and barber have all gone down to worse takedowns.

Thought Horth beat Petrovic 29-28. Horth should very much consider moving up to 135 imo. She is too old, too green, & way too slow to beat the top flyweights. I think she’d have a better shot of getting ranked at 135. Petrovic’s camp needs a new striking coach. She trains with Cecilia Bolander who also gets rocked every time she gets hit, and blocks with her face.

Jasmine looked good, she’s kind of got slow hands but she is long & determined. I thought her wrestling looked good tonight. IIRC she had a brief wrestling run and won a silver medal at the Canadian championship. I really like the crucifix, & the addition of the front headlock game is unique among women in mma. Da Silva looked regressed. I have a feeling she’s going to be a mid card action fighter, never a contender.

Blanchfield/Namajunas had some Nunes/Pena 1 vibes to me. Rose seemed to be faster & hit harder.. but the relentless pressure got to her. Erin’s still young. I am hoping her corner will really hone on the wrestling.. or she could hire a private coach. I didn’t like the way she was throwing the body kicks, but I thought her hands & the leg kicks looked good, especially since she was fighting someone who I thought was going to be a much better boxer.

Not a problem for me

Cycles, water retention, bloating, all a pain in the butt when it comes to hard cuts.

But yeah there's been some shocking ones over the years, where you wonder if they even try.
