Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

Last minute predictions for today's UFC card.

Zarah Fairn is nearing 40, standing at 5'10"-5'11" tall. She was never going to make 136. Dumont was right (predictably so), this is a Featherweight fight and probably the last one. I think Fairn goes 0-4 in the UFC and gets cut on Monday.

Edwards barely edges out another boring decision. I hope I'm wrong though.

50/50 on Fiorot vs Namajunas. They both have been out for so long, it'll be interesting to see their game plans and if there's any changes in their games. Rose is going up against a large woman, Fiorot has the build of a bantamweight (she doesn't even have a waist!!!) and will more than likely be outsized by a large margin in there. If Fiorot respects Rose too much, she might get a decision. If she goes out there for the kill, she's probably getting a decision too but at least it'll be a clear win. If there's a finish, I'm expecting Rose to pull it off. 50/50.

Missed the first fight, caught the 2nd half of the Edwards fight. Who needs double leg takedowns when the good ol' head & arm throw works every time? I know it's staple in WMMA, but I haven't seen it work this well since Cheyanne Buys got tossed a dozen times by Montserrat Ruiz.

Rose vs. Manon was pretty interesting, in the PBP thread I was wondering if Rose had ever faced a southpaw since she seemed rather confused, I just looked up her record and it turns out she never has. She was having more trouble than usual landing her left hand, most of her jabs got stuffed and she couldn't find the range for the hook either. There were also several times when she tried to blitz in with a combo and ended up whiffing & running right past Manon. She's also still easy to bully in the clinch, Manon had her hurt with a couple knees and if she'd just clinch abused her instead of resetting it would've been game over.

As for Manon, that strategy shouldn't have worked against Rose but it did. It was an outside striking match for the most part and Rose always wins those, but the southpaw matchup and Manon's athleticism was enough to take away Rose's best tools and win a decision. It was kinda shocking how well Manon's jab and lead hook were working until Rose switched stances, there was a stretch where she just threw the lead hook as an automatic response to everything and it worked a lot better than it should have at keeping Rose stuck at range and going after bad entries.

So where does that leave us? Rose is still a fighter with giant holes in her game who can easily be clinch abused, but for some reason no one other than Karolina has deliberately gone after her to clinch her and beat the shit out of her body. Manon is more or less a 125 Holly Holm; very athletic, pretty basic & rote boxing, lots of side kicks, and needs to throw way more round kicks to the open side. If you're a southpaw, you need to be kicking Rose in the body until she falls over in the fetal position.

Overall, I don't think the long layoff was good for either of them. Rose looked a bit lost in there and her speed & timing was worse than usual. Manon gave Rose too much respect and let her back into the 3rd round when she should've stepped on the gas and pressured her until she broke.

Was watching Track & Field for most parts of the card, but did catch Fiorot vs Rose.

Glad it was not the Rose from Carla fight, because it was a pretty interesting striking thing. Was a bit surprised that Manon was able to just get jp every time Rose even tried to get into a position to grapple, after the couple of slips that led to ground (was there any actual attempts to wrestle? I think all grappling attempts were opporunity attacks, not created by wrestling first?)

Anyway, fun enough fight. And glad Rose showed she belonged so the Rose Cariuses cannot try to reduce the value of the first big name Fiorot got on her CV.

ps. Is thd weird Fiorot poster in the UFC forum a bad attempt at a comedy gimmick or do we have a new strain of Carius on our hands?

I don’t know. I just put him on ignore

The previous three posts are a mystery to me, I've tried to check out what I assume are the offending posts, but nada. Has the guy been banned or more likely I'm blocked. I don't remember saying anything anti-Fiorot, I could understand if it was a Rose simp. Maybe he's a deep cover Pat Barry fanboy.

Manon Fiorot vs. Rose Namajunas. When Rose walked out without Trevor Whitman I thought uh oh. Not a good sign. So I guess she changed camps? Manon looked as good as I've seen her. Improved takedown defense proved effective. Planted her feet well to sit down on her punches. Cardio held up even after the nasty cut streaming bright red blood from the accidental head butt. She is tough and I like that about her. Rose looked more alert than she did in her previous fight. Glad seeing that. Still seemed a tad slower. Sucks that she broke her finger in round one. Nevertheless a well deserved victory for Manon.

Zarah Fairn vs. Jacqueline Cavalcanti. Cavalcanti pretty much schooled Fairn (who looked all of her 41 years).

Nora Cornolle vs. Joselyne Edwards. I scored it 29-28 for Edwards but didn't think it was a robbery. Edwards had a couple of opportunities to step on the gas and go for a finish or a clear round win and just didn't and it cost her the decision loss. Cornolle looked kinda jittery and tentative for her UFC debut and played it pretty safe. That's understandable. She will be more confident and exciting as she gains experience in the UFC.

Yeah I don't get it either Askafan.

@Askafan @PurpleStorm the dude who keeps on calling Fiorot "mommy" and is now on 2.0 version of his account after seemingly getting banned with the last attempt.

I guessed as much. I can only see posts folk have reposted though, must have blocked me somewhere along the line. Everyone knows that Grasso is the only gal worthy of the "mommy" accolade though.

Rose did not look much bigger than her last few fights in there. Manon could fill up rather well for a Bantamweight stint, she's got broad shoulders and no waist line. Damn.

If Manon wanted to make a statement, she failed. Her performance wasn't much more impressive than Blanchfield's against Santos.

Regardless, I think they both deserve a title shot already. I think Manon has the bigger claim and better resume to get it over Blanchfield, but I think they both have done more than enough. Hopefully they won't get booked against each other in a title eliminator (although they could use a five round main event for experience).

I'm expecting Valentina to defeat Alexa this time around, and Alexa has no claim for a rematch. I'd like to see Valentina vs Manon, Alexa vs Taila, and for Erin to slow down a bit and wait for her well deserved turn at the title.

He's bannded again now which is probably why the posts aren't showing up. I haven't seen him post anything too outrageous (indeed, his Manonpoasts are almost wholesome in today's OnlyFans saturated world) though I might have missed him flying completely off the chain a few times of course. Sure he might be a bit, erm, unusually passionate about 'Mommy' Manon... but do we want to live in a world where loving too much is a crime?

Title shot merry-go-round:
I think Manon is a bad machup for Alexa, but a good matchup for Valentina (unless Val really is plummeting of a cliff lately).
On the other hand I think Erin is a bad matchup for Valentina, but less so for Alexa.
I also think 5 rounders are good for Erin and bad for Manon.

Unlike above commenters I'd actually like to see a title eliminator between Manon/Erin, it would be a good fight and would make the winner feel like a real 'true contender' champ-in-waiting. I wouldn't be surprised and can't blame the UFC if they don't wait around and just book one of them directly for the belt instead though. Again, I think Manon would win a 3-round co-main event title eliminator, but Erin would win a 5 round main event title eliminator...

Dern finally understands that her grappling is useless if she can never get her opponents to the ground.

Did Cejudo really say, "your butt is my grip....the fatter or bigger it is, the easier it is to grip" ?

I could have taught her that. Anyways, dern has known that her wrestling needs work for a long time now, she just sucks at it. Personally, I think she'd take to judo better, but it is nice to see her working on wrestling with someone like henry.

*edit* I just watched the whole video

It looks like she plans on doing her camps with henry from now on, but we'll see as she has a habit to go through coaches quickly. Henry seems to be focusing a lot on distance management and leg kicks.

Well that's the thing, she was getting frustrated in practice at her lack of takedown progress and someone said she 'needs (to) see judo', and she went and called Henry.

as it happens I had the below saved as a draft ready to drop tomorrow, might as well fire it now since it will seem less out of the blue anyway...

Another former Brazilian National Squad Judoka, Dione Barbosa, is trying to make it as a brutal Ultimate Human Cockfighter. Appearing on Dana's Cantenders tonight as a 1-week notice late replacement for Corinne The Raspberry and aiming join her fellow BrazilTeam Judokas-Turned-HumanCockfighters Amanda Ribas and Luana Santos in the UFC.

In unrelated news, @fortheo has felt an unusual tingly sensation all day long.
