Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

I don’t think she has any desire to continue fighting. She has her twitch channel, Invicta gig, and writes for ESPN. She seems to have found her niche in the industry post retirement
She also got her nose fixed, which pretty much rules out getting punched in the face again.

What a shame.

this week's ufc picks:
- fatima kline to bounce back from her short notice loss
- kareckaite is HUGE and aggressive, i'll go with her
- gut says dern here. i've not been impressed with ribas' striking post-ATT. i am of course expecting a sloppy (but entertaining) strking match beween these two grapplers.

Invicta FC 60: Rubin vs. Cantuária takes place from Center Stage in Atlanta. The main card will air via CBS Sports Network at 7 p.m. ET. The night's preliminary card will stream live on Invicta’s official YouTube Channel and Facebook Page at 5:30 p.m. ET. Tickets to the event will be available through Ticketmaster.

The current fight card can be found below:

Bantamweight: Olga Rubin vs. Mayra Cantuária
Featherweight: Jackie Cataline vs. Jamie Edenden
Bantamweight: Shanna Young vs. Katharina Lehner
Flyweight: Victoria Leonardo vs. Rayla Nascimento
Strawweight: Liana Pirosin vs. Shino VanHoose
Atomweight: Giulliany Perêa vs. Hope Holmes
Featherweight: Joy Pendell vs. Krissa Timbs

I was speaking with another fighter who was supposed to be on this, but apparently an opponent couldn’t be found in time.

They're so getting Cataline ready for the title.

If she wins, her next fight is for the belt and Invicta will finally have a new Featherweight champion, after a few years of having a vacant belt.

No idea what they do with dern next. The only fresh match up ahead of her is the loser of the next title fight between Zhang and suarez. Other than that she'll either have to fight back in the rankings or take another rematch against either yan, lemos,
Jandiroba or Andrade

Really, really, really happy Kline beat up the russian.

Was on my last legs during the second fight, essentially napping already, have to watch it again, I have 0 things to say about it at the moment.

Ribas/Dern was enjoyable on the ground. How was Dern's english in the cage interview? I just accidentally stopped the replay and the app does not "remember" where it was cut for replays of live-streams, and I cannot be arsed to find the right spot just for that.

Skip Jandiroba for marketing reasons for a title shot?

2 things.
1st - I forgot Ronda even existeds which is weird since I was a super fan but congratz to her on her 2nd child.

2nd - How did Dern look tonight? I unfollowed all MMA on social media and almost never see them on my algorithm. However, today it sees like darn near every fight ending popped up. I saw she got a sub but how did her striking and takedowns look?

She shot a very well-timed TD in the 1st and won that round via control, not much damage done. In the 2nd she tries another TD but Ribas defends it and puts her on her back. She attempts some subs and even ends on top of Ribas at the en dof the round, but loses it.
In the 3rd, during a clinch position along the fence, Ribas takes her down, and from there Dern started working on the armbar.

There was not a lot of striking. She scored some leg kicks but I didn't notice a difference in her punches. And she keeps moving backward in a straight line while attacked instead of pivoting on a side.

Good win for her though.

agreed, it was a good win for mac dern. it seemed to me that dern's wrestling has improved, and her omoplata sweep was sick as :)

(ufc fightpass used to include the post-fight speech with their single fight vids, but no longer. it's easier to find them on yt)

i am so bummed, virna's sub on lemos was so good that people took notice and now all that momentum has evaporated...

I have to admit I am myself also a victim of Jandiroba's low marketability - and I even try (and fail) to just see the excellent grappling.

So being real about it - having Suarez to fight Zhang now and having Dern to jump Jandiroba while they are at it would be pretty much easy to see as UFC's plan for the near future. The timing's good - Dern will be ready once Zhang/Suarez is after their upcoming bout.

"...Mackenzie Dern garnered the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for her submission of Amanda Ribas in the evening’s strawweight main event. After two competitive rounds, Dern went to work in Round 3, methodically working her way into position for an armbar to force the tap from her Brazilian foe 4:56 into the period."
