Tarrifs can be a useful tool when used in a targeted way for a specific purpose. Biden had tariffs on China, just measured and targeted ones. Trump’s are not measured and targeted. Of course it’s possible to hurt sales of an imported good with a tariff. But the sales that do exist cost Americans more, and you do risk the other country imposing tariffs in return. That happened last time with China; they responded with soybean tariffs that killed our farmers, and we had to bail them out using the very billions that came from our pockets due to Trump’s tariffs. The whole thing was stupid. The trade war finally ended when China promised to buy more of our stuff—but they lied and never did. It hurt our farmers and cost us all more money, and it was all for nothing. Tariffs like Trump is trying to do now just make no sense.
