Why is Golf so big and widley covered by espn?

Here's a quick test to determine whether an activity is a sport or not: could women compete directly against men? According to that test golf is not, as a couple of women have competed in men's tournaments. Neither is car racing, though it may be physically demanding.

I like golf, I'd be a 'journeyman' golfer a million times faster than a journeyman boxer.

I'd make a shitload more too.

Damn, I guess Boxing isn't a sport either, 'cause Lucia Riker would've wrecked a lot of dudes in her prime.

Ann Wolfe would fuck some guys up right now as well.

I'm also pretty sure that even Gina Carrano could lay the smack down on more than a couple mid level mma guys.

What I'm trying to say is: You "test" phails.

The question isn't whether or not Golf is a sport, it clearly is. The question is should it be on ESPN?

I'd put it in there with Bassmasters/Ping-pong/Cheerleeding/Scrabble/Spelling Bee's/Strongman Competitions/weightlifting/bodybuilding... fuck, even arm wrestling/little league baseball... as activities that should never be shown on the USA's premiere sports network, BUT... opinions vary.

I'm sure that rules out about every sport across the globe. There are always going to be cases that go against the norm. Lucia Rijker is the best womens boxer of all-time. On the norm, the average ranked woman gets 30 seconds of slap from the averaged ranked male.

babe dickerson played virutally every sport. So none of them are sports based on that test.

i also dont know about:

it would be a matter of different training. I think the time required would be similar. One wont be making thousands a year without at least a couple years of training in golf with an instructor, or at least playing with decent people who can also give tips. That on a consistant basis, and that is if you're talented. I would say someone could be a knock some bums out and be a journeyman for a while with a couple years of boxing training too. Especially if they are talented.

You can go on forever, but I think at the end of the day we have to agree there is no simple, clear cut definition of what a sport is.

That being said, we can sense what sports require the greatest physical and mental output to be able to win at.

lol@sexism being the true test of anything.

If you're single, I'd wager I can figure out why. If not, you better belt your female again before she has any delusions about ruining the credibility of anything male in your opinion by simply wanting to participate.

Good enough for me. End thread.

i definetly agree. I think boxing is the hardest because of the mix of both physical and mental abilities.

i was just trying to point out that golf is a sport (when people said it wasnt). And after supporting that, i tried to point out that american football, baseball, and basketball get the most air time, and that golf is insignificant in comparison, because these guys were using those sports to support their claims that golf isnt a sport. I thought it was fairly hippocritical.

i would love to see a more soccer, boxing, kickboxing, judo, jiujitsu, and raquet ball (dont know if that is even on tv) than any other sports on tv. But I certainly dont blame golf for the lack of that. Moreover, I think the airtime of football sucks, and in no way tried to down play the athletic ability of football players in any position. Simply comparing it to golf.

white people with lots of money like every sport that they can exploit and get a bunch of sponsors and get stupid people to buy what the sponsors tell them to.

BUt the disposable income of the average golf fan is pretty high, ence the immense appeal to sponsors.

Is dodgeball a sport?

Rip Torn says, "You bet your ass it is".

john daly was, drunk and addicted to food and still making millions of dollars as one of the top pros in the game. in no other sport can you abuse yourself the way john daly did and still be on top of your game.

ricardo mayorga?

let's not forget that a decent golfer Koed Wlad Klitschko

I don't see what the big deal is? Golf is obviously a sport as sport is not pure muscle. Golf is like a mixture of strong man's dart and chess.

Athletes are *all* different short and simple.

Here are some athletes playing the same sport but with wholly different bodies:

Basketball - Nate Robinson vs. Shaquille O'Neil
Baseball- David Wells vs. A-Rod
Hockey - Theoren Fleury vs. Zdeno Chara

Then compare cross sport bodies that are physically honed for their specific sports:

Olympic Kayaker vs. Sumo Wrestler
Gymnast vs. Figure Skater
Olympic 5m Platform Dive vs. Marathon Runner

One thing we should all learn from history is not to be so bias and demeaning of other arts; because that is what sports are ultimately, a form of physical art.

Appreciate all the varieties we have, be humble and stop judging so crudely!

I am 99% certain that if a Bob Sapp like figure played golf, he would never do as well as a Tiger shaped figure.

Golf gets huge respect from me, simply because there has been no sport that I've tried to play that I've spent plenty of money on...and got nothing but a bunch of shitty scorecards, sunburn, a thousand lost balls and a handful of fines from the clubhouse for swearing, playing slow and not replacing divets.

golf kicked your ass dude. because of this, i would recommend that you not participate in any actual competitive sports.

James Toney.

Imagine coming down the last 4 holes of August with a 1 shot lead and one tiny mistake can cost you a million dollars and the tournament. How many people could handle that pressure and win?

I think you need to take a deep breath and relax here. Warren Buffett has no atheltic ability and is the weathiest man in the world. Does that disgust you as well?

I think getting $100million for doing a Nike photoshoot later that week is instrumental in helping him cope with the prospect of missing out on that. I know what you're saying though, but at the same time no it's not a sport... I've outgrown trying to have this argument with golf people. It's like trying to have a logical religious discussion with someone with views that are opposite of yours. You just kinda gotta be like 'well bless their heart'.

This thread is perfect for the boxing forum, thanks for not moving it mods.
