Why do people care about fighter pay?

Because better pay = better talent. I like High School Football too, but it isn't the NFL is it?

Cuz nosy, little fux like to get up in another man’s financial business. It’s fucking weird.

I don't give a fuck about the top guys making millions crying. But the lower end guys should be paid way more

I'm still fucked up on anesthesia so don't expect a detailed retort, but man, to me, "I don't care because it doesn't effect me" is just such a weird philosophy for people to defend, especially when you have to narrow it to a specific example in order to say that, when the example is indicative of a systemic issue that definitely does effect you
This right here. Speaking in a general sense, if everybody adopts a “I don’t care about things that don’t affect me personally” attitude nothing will ever get better for anybody. Fighting for your fellow man leads to a better life for everybody.

That's an independent contractor, hence the contractor part. Maybe you're thinking of freelancers or something? Employees have a fixed schedule of part time or full time hours and are paid either salaries or hourly. Fighters don't have regular schedules and turn downs dates, opponents and locations all the time.

Personal trainers in gyms are independent contractors, and similarly have uniforms, can't just take their clients to another gym, while the person at the desk is an employee, and there are probably also managers who are employees who have to keep a set number of office hours.

I just follow the IRS guidelines and the UFC fits the criteria of an employer.

Because it holds back the sport.

If there was a more even revenue split and better contracts for the fighters, I bet over time more people would look to MMA as a viable career.

Would you get your skull caved in for 8 grand you keep 25% of if you’re lucky? I wouldn’t and most other people wouldn’t either.
Ah yes, look at all those orgs that paid their fighters a large amount of money, like affliction. It sure is thriving today

Sherdoggers like to complain. And most are very stupid. It's a crazy combo

you can show me 1 boxer that is earning massive money and i can show you 5 that have gone completely off the rails when they have started earning decent money, hundreds and hundreds of them
Saying we will underpay you because you cant handle the cash is ludicrous.

Because one day, the next generation of potential up-and-coming fighters are going to decide to do something else with their life that actually makes money. Maybe other sports, maybe even something else. But if you don't pay today's fighters better, the next generation may not be interested and we'll be left with the Mickey Gall's of the world.
This is already happening, which is why LHW and HW are wastelands, with MW lagging as well; there are more professional choices and a smaller overall talent pool once you hit the size of the larger weight classes.

They can’t afford to but the UFC (who gives about 13% of revenue to fighters, in comparison of most major sports which are around 50%) absolutely can. The UFC has a monopoly.

I mean shit, even the bonuses.. 50k for 20+ years. They should index that shit to inflation.

simple question out of pure curiosity.
I’m not disagreeing it’s too low. It is definitely too low.

Can anyone tell me why they care though? Is it about opposing the rich and powerful in a general sense?

My opinion: I personally don’t care because like, it doesn’t affect me. If I was going to lobby for higher pay, these famous athletes who earn above median income would not be the top professions on my list. I’m not even sure they respect the average person anyway or are amazing people, so I don’t feel morally obliged.
If fighters had better pay they can get better training and wed have better fights instead we get NCAA wrestling since it's taught for free in grade school..

What data do you have to support that high level athletes like Federer, Lebron, Ronaldo, or Ohtanei would be willing to be punched in the face for money instead of playing their own sports?

I never named top guys in other sports. I said better athletes.
There are a lot of guys who may not be at the pro level in a particular sport that are way better athletes than a lot of MMA fighters. There is currently no major league for wrestlers who have ended their college ilgibility for instance. If there was money in it, maybe they'd continue on. It doesn't automatically make them better fighters but it widens the talent pool.

They take brain damage for our amusement. Dana and them take the lion share. That's wrong
