Why DId Penn leave Gracie for Andre Pederneiras

back to my original question

I am confused, was BJ living in california and he went to the Ralph Gracie academy there?

Or did he learn BJJ in Hawaii

BJ starts rolling with a guy named Tom Callos who had connections to Ralph. Tom takes BJ with him to California to meet Ralph and train with the guys. Ralph was impressed and wanted him to stay but BJ lived in HI. BJ's dad then sends him CA to train with Ralph and BJ rented an apt. down the street. i think he got as far as brown with Ralph. from there, i don't know what happened but BJ left Ralph and went back to HI. then he went to compete in Brazil (but not live there), got his BB from Pedeneiras, then competed in the tournament and won.

wow must be nice to have money to get set up like that and train in BJJ which makes no money

his dad is one of the richest man in Hilo.
He also thought that if BJ wasn't training and focused on something he would end up in jail for fighting so much. Well.. good investment.. now his son still fights but makes money doing so.

Tom Callos is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. He does a lot for the TMA community.

He was neighbors with the Penn family and would see BJ and his buddies boxing in the backyard, probably not unlike the amateur youtube videos we all like to laugh at. Tom started to teach him bjj to have a training partner, but also because he was bit of a troublemaker. Tom knew he found something special and referred him to Ralph.

Also in my example you quoted, the story I heard was...they were just having a roll (no strikes), then all of a sudden he Ralph just opens up and starts pounding on him. Even if Dave could hang, how do you react in that situation? It would feel weird trying to get into an all out brawl with your instructor. Not just because he's your iunstructor, he's a pro mma fighter, but also the "wtf is going on" moment thats going on in your head.

I heard a similar story from someone who saw such an occurence. Ralph was rolling with a dude then said "MMA rules" and sprang from sidemount to mount on the dude. He then started throwing punches, tagged the guy on the bottom a few times and the guy got pissed. Ralph responded with "what would you do if this were MMA or a streetfight? complain?". Meanwhile, it was supposed to be just a normal roll.

What happened with Crosley?

Can anyone please explain what happened with crosley and ralph. Its been asked a few times in this thread and noone has answered. I did a search and I can't find anything other than crosley was kicked out of the academy.

Renzo Gracie Legacy and the BJ/Camarillo/Ralph feud

Dan Camarillo says:

David in no way waited until he got his black to leave Ralph. There was all kinds of problems throughout the time we started at his academy. Some very small, but when you get older you start to understand that they are still very unprofessional. The couple of big problem was a great reason to leave. I wont get into details, I don

wow. there are no words for that kind of thing.

Well, there are, but I've already got the dubbs :D

I just wish he had done that to BJ.

BJ would murder him to death inside of 2 minutes.

From reading BJ's book, there's a lot more to it than just Ralph being an abusive dick and Ralph not promoting him.

and Ralph shouldve respected that but tbh its his academy and what he says goes. Bj made the right decision by trying to learn as much as he could and not let some one stop him. my old TKD teacher is a great man and HIGHLY known in the TKD world (olympic committee) but hes also very old fashioned. when i told him i wanted to train in BJJ and muay thai. he basically told me to choose TKD or no be at his school. Old school isnt going to change the way they think. just throwing that out there. :P

My Judo teacher is as old school as he can get (as i have read he is a little like Ralph, very abusive sometimes)and he doesnt cares about that crap.

He keeps telling me that finding talent is like a "pressure cooker", you grab a bunch of initiates and give them hell, those that remain you polish them. Its not very PC but cant argue results.

The difference is that he is loyal to his students and the students are loyal to him, its a 2 way street. He also has no qualms on who you train with or what.

Some things come full circle; Crosley is back training at Ralph's in SF every now and then.

If you weren't there for the beef, and aren't involved with any party today, its all really old crap. Let it die. Ralph has mellowed out a lot and he certainly doesn't conduct himself that way any longer.

At the time, BJ was 17.

Ralph was notorious for calling out his students into a boxing/mma fight.

He used to call out David because his standp up was weak.

Bj used to volunteer all the time because he could stand up and trade back to Ralph with his backyard boxing skills.

One time, David arrived at the academy and Ralph went to hug him.

But instead he switch to a double leg and took him down for a gnp clinic from the mount.

BJ also trained at AKA under Frank Shamrock for awhile around his time in NorCal.

Ralph may be crazy and mean, but he his BJJ sure is legit! Just look at all his students past and present.:icon_surp
