And there was a red autobot plane, there was a ufo, springer was a helicopter, skyjet was a jet.

There were also decepticons that were cars and trucks.

How come they are cars and the deceptocons are Tanks, planes and boomboxs and all types of cool stuff but Autobots are just auto. I get the name but why limit themselves like that. Why not turn into planes and fly everywhere instead of having to be carried overseas by our boats and planes. Doesnt make sense.

"Autobot" is short for "Autonomous Robotic Organism. It's not supposed to refer to cars specifically.

As already stated, The Autobots did have a Boombox counterpart to the Decepticon Soundwave. His name was Blaster.

And the Autobots had other sub-factions within them such as the Aerialbots (all airplanes) and the Dinobots (self explanatory).

Of course, the bad guys get all the cool factions:

The Constructicons (construction vehicles) who combine into Devastator.
The Combaticons (military vehicles) who combine into Bruticus.
The Stunticons (stunt cars and a truck) who combine into Menasor.
The Predacons (animals) who combine into Predaking.
