who's the biggest female popstar right now?

BTS. I made fun of BTS on social media and people sent me death threats. This has never happened in my life....
I'm rock/metal as can be but husband saw a BTS magazine at Safeway yesterday and considered buying it for me. I was truly gutted when they announced their split. A lot of it due to circumstance and going to S Korea, but I liked BTS heaps.

They didn't get military exemption? Korea is about to lose some big bucks

Olivia Rodrigo
I was like "who?" but I've heard this song before:

Actually pretty good. Doesn't take itself too seriously, catchy, not overtly sexualised garbage, reminds me a bit of 2000s stuff with the poprock feel. Nice.

Floor Jansen. She's a 6' Amazon so she's definitely taller & bigger than Taylor Swift.
Way better singer too.

Love this one.

Bella Poarch or Kate bush
Funny how Running up that hill blew up recently.

It is Ariana Grande her Instagram follower count is 242 million!!! 242,000,000!! It is more than Dua Lipa, Billie Eillish and Lady Gaga combined.

Dua Lipa 67 million

Billie Eilish 87 million

And

Lady Gaga has 48 million almost.

Gaga I think is a better artist, more unique and entertaining a Madonna 2.0 and more that is better. BUT Gaga really became famous RIGHT before Instagram blew up, as such I think that is why she has way less followers. Her best albums and work was 2008 to 2013 which was before Instagram, snapchat and TikTok

In terms of album sales and name recognition, it's still Taylor Swift. Social media wise, it's Ariana Grande. Dua Lipa has a lot of hit singles, but her albums don't really sell well. Adele did a lot of album sales but not so much her last album. Billie Eilish had a lot of buzz, but seems to be a bit quieter now. Olivia Rodrigo seems to have a lot of crossover appeal. You'll hear her music in unexpected places and even as a middle aged guy, I admit that I like some of her songs.

Im sure some average, everyday artist recording from home will become more popular than any studio artist in the next 5-10 years. Home recording equipment is super cheap and easy to use. Plus everything is digital so no need to press albums. Some can even make their own music videos for cheap. Its all about the followers now.

Also, lets face it. Actual singing ability or crazy talent isnt exactly the formula for pop star success.

There are influencers who get paid more than signed singers. Its only a matter of time.

Whoa didn't even know they were splitting up.

I love that this is a conversation. I have no idea why but I really liked BTS before I even went to Korea. I was gutted when they broke up.

That's all but one. Right now there's a Big 7 that stands above the rest:
  • Taylor Swift
  • Ariana Grande
  • Dua Lipa
  • Olivia Rodrigo
  • Billie Eilish
  • Doja Cat
  • Adele

Forgot about Doja Cat. Guess she hadn't been on my radar as much lately. It may be worth noting that she's the only one, besides Billie Eilish, that doesn't have more than one number 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Also, ALL 11 of the songs on Rodrigo's Sour album charted top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, even though 6 of them weren't even released as singles. She was the first female artist to do that.

While true, I wouldn't put too much stock in the Billboard, anymore. It's never figured out how to weight streaming and demand-expressions properly.

For example, the song that spent the most weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 in 2020? "The Box" by Roddy Rich: eleven weeks straight. Yet the YouTube music video for that song only has 431m views. Meanwhile, "Bellyache" didn't even chart on the Hot 100, and it now has 585m views. In fact, Billie has six songs with 500m+ YouTube views. Nevertheless, it's remarkable how many total Hot 100 hits-- 30 altogether-- she has already compiled despite her discography beginning effectively just 5 years ago. Rodrigo has just 5.

Rodrigo had a fire hot year, but comparatively, she's a flavor of month. The same can be said of Billie when measured against Taylor or Ariana.

Duly noted. Although with "The Box", there are 3 different versions of videos on YouTube that have close to 1 billion views combined. There was also a delay in releasing the official music video, which likely held back views. The audio version on YouTube, which was released when the song was as its hottest point, has the most views. The single did go diamond, so I think that does help explain why it was #1. Also, Rodrigo doesn't just have 5 Hot 100 hits. She has 11 in the top 30. She's released 5 as singles, but ALL 11 songs from her debut album Sour charted. So it's still 11, not 5.
