Who truly is the best fighter to never win the title?

Some really good replies already and the fact the same names are popping up regularly speaks for those guys. The lads who mentioned Yoel Romero I really think he was very hard done by in the Decisions he lost. Very good fighter Very Very good fighter who in front of 3 different judges could have won more than one

Benavidez for best #2 guy who would've otherwise been champ during his eras, and was competive with the champs regardless.

Probably Condit for guy who got title shots and almost won. Head kicked GSP and robbed against Lawler.

Benevidez is a true hard luck story there was always just one guy in front of him and for most of that it was Mighty Mouse one of the best to ever do it

My problem with Yoel is he was given an interim title fight (actually two) and an undisputed fight and failed to make weight both times, thereby making him ineligible.

So he never won the interim title he should've against Rockhold, and even if you had given him the Whittaker 2 decision he wouldn't have become champ.

Not going to feel too sorry for a guy who never became champ because of his weight.

One of the hardest losses in a title fight for a guy who never won the title has to be the Gangster Chael Sonnen's loss to Anderson Silva. Promise your father who dies that you will win the belt, Beat up the MW GOAT for 4 and a half rounds only to get submitted by a Hail Mary triangle

True bro I never really thought of it like that

Yoel Romero IMHO. His run to the top included a resume of wins that exceeds the quality of almost every MW champion of all time let alone other contenders.

The only reasons he didn't win the belt were:
1) Bisping/GSP holding up the division with some all time cherry-picking
2) Missing weight against Rockhold for the interim belt (still won via KO)
3) 2 extremely close decisions against Whittaker that could have went his way

At the end of the day, the belt is a prop and "# of title defenses" has to be taken with a grain of salt when it comes to GOAT status. Yoel is easily in the top 5 all time MWs and JDS deserves similar credit at HW for having to go through a murderer's row of contenders while the belt was held up.

Jon Fitch gets my #2 vote. He was 22-1-2 with the one loss being to GSP over the span of 9 years. Poirier is amazing and has significantly overachieved but he had a clear ceiling/weaknesses IMHO leading to numerous losses to the next tier of guys in his era. If GSP didn't exist, Fitch would have been champ for YEARS so he edges Dustin out IMO

I have to go with El Cucuy. In his prime, he legit was the boogeyman. Insane run and just due to horrible luck never even got the chance to fight for an undisputed title.

I'd say T-Ferg, because of the 12 fights winning streak and the fact that he never lost against the champ, he just never had the opportunity to fight him.

Yoel again missed weight in Whittaker 2, his only undisputed title fight, so even if he had gotten the decision he wouldn't have been champion.

My vote would go to Gathje, Poirier, Colby (puke), Wonderboy, Overeem. Reem was in Pride, but had 20 UFC fights mostly in his prime.

Maia/Fitch, but they were one dimensional so less surprising they never won the strap.

Gustafson probably becomes champ in a world without JJ, as does Jon Fitch, but I don't think they were as talented as some of the guys mentioned above.
Colby is one of the biggest UFC hype jobs in history. Wrestler with a gas tank and no finishing ability. They keep shilling that he's good for losing to Usman who is also overrated.
My pick is Mirko if we're not counting tournament wins.

LOL at anyone acting like winning a UFC title is the end all be all.
